MT's jump drives are described in the Referee Manual as "a special high yield power plant linked to an integral net in the craft's hull for initiating and maintaining the jump field. Because a jump drive is also a power plant, it must be allocated fuel separate and distinct from the craft's power plant."

But, MT Referee Manual also describes the jump drive as having "energy sinks" that the black globe feeds power into, and it says, "If a ship absorbs enough energy to make a jump and is supplied with sufficient fuel, it may jump at the end of the turn."

Uh, what? Why does it need the capacitors if it's generating its own power?

I believe the capacitors supply all of the power to initiate Jump in one rapid burst, whereas the High-Yield Power Plant produces the energy to be stored in the capacitors over a number of minutes.
