Bang Damage

Correct on the ear-plugs comment. Black Hawk Down does illustrate one point though - recall that one of the soldiers had his off-sider fire the LMG right next to his ear and he became deaf as a result. The effects are real enough, but the range is pretty limited.

Then, page 254 should be updated to reflect that.

In very limited cases, when weapons are right next to ears, as it was used to torture Christian Bale in Rescue Dawn, is where the Bang damage is used.

Also it may not just be the sound that deafens but the pressure difference from the explosion that propels the round to target. Grenade launchers might sound quieter but the pressure from firing it is more than a bullet.

Explosions don't necessarily kill with the fire and shrapnel they kill with the concussion effect from the change in air pressures that the explosion triggers.

I don't have the tabulated data handy, but I'll go out on a limb here and say no. A typical GL fires the round at a much lower velocity, hence a lower pressure. If you're keyed in correctly, it's possible to acutally watch the round through it's arc of travel if viewed from the firing point.
