Artwork for the new book

I konw any discussion of artwork is premature and there are lots of great potential for any current artists who want to do art for 2320AD (afterall, you just take the look of today and transpose it about 50 years or so into the "future" with lots of retro justapositions).

But, wouldn't be cool if Marc would allow the covers of the old modules and games boxes to used as full colour inserts for the new book?

Plus have loads of new art?...what do the others think?

I've been in discussion with Hunter about the art. We have to see how layout goes before we do anything. I want a color section with aliens, a map of earth, and several color deckplans, but we have to wait and see.

I would like to see lots of cool new art, though the 2300AD covers were a bit of a mixed bag (Invasion? Beanstalk? Energy Curve?), with some that were very cool (Aurore Sourcebook, Mission Arcturus, 2300AD boxed set, Nyotekundu).

I would like to see follow the same pattern as the original, with all vehicles, weapons, equipment illustrated, but that depends on space and costs.

Colin, you might want to check out Laurent Esmiol's work at Etranger. His work is phenomenal. Check e.g. the Paris Class Destroyer or The Ships of the Kafer War.

P.S. For pen-and-paper illustrations of weapons, vehicles and equipment, as well as "mood" illos, my vote goes for Bryan Gibson. A.C. Farley and Rob Caswell were good as well, but I don't know if they're doing illustration work anymore.

AC Farley still works in illustration doing various book covers but all specialises in 3D modelling & animation-

No idea about Rob or Bryan though. Rob's work was brilliant as was Steve Venters on a good day.

I really liked Blair Reynolds' work. I think he's been doing Cthulhu illustrations.

I would use as little recycled artwork as possible. Depending on the sitch the artwork may not be easily obtained either legally or physically. Too much and it tends to affect reviews and buyer perception negatively.

Creating new artwork allows the new edition to set its own mark and stand apart from previous ones where desired. For me the pseudo-80's Aliens look is well...80's. Now I'm not saying scrapping the whole look but an update would be nice. I do think as much equipment, vehicles, etc. should be illustrated and labeled. Stocking a book full of weapons and gear illos but not labeling what they represent limits their usefulness.

BG has worked for QLI before so I'm guessing that since he did artwork for 2300AD he'll be doing artwork for 2320AD. ;) Gets my vote for the equipment/vehicle/etc. illos and some character situational illos and such.

As for Blair Reynolds the only recent references I can find are for the now semi-defunct Pagan Publishing and their related book company. Considering the quality of the PP books (Call of Cthulhu supplements) and his artwork for them I highly recommended seeing if he could do some artwork for 2320AD. His B&W interior artwork in Realm of Shadows reminds me of the late Kevin Ramos' work in the classic Dreamland & Gaslight books for CoC, which were well done. I also like his color cover work.

I also like Dennis Detwiller's work along a similar vein.

[EDIT]Some general clearing up and the last line.[/EDIT]

The etranger stuff is fantstic work by several folks!

and , yes, were I to get the offer I'd work on 2300 in a flash, as I always enjoyed that particular project.

I'll second BG illustrations for 2320 as well as the CGI work of Laurent Esmiol.

I've been talking to Laurent about it, actually. He's got a new baby, or should soon, so he may not be available to do much. One can hope. If we do that color section, with those three deckplans, my vote is for Laurent to do the ships, and have Wayne Peters do the deckplans. We shall have to see how the layout goes. I like Bryan's stuff too, and would like him for the tech stuff on the inside. However, it's not my call.

We shall see soon. Loren Wiseman should be finished with the editing soon and it'll head to layout after that, perhaps with a brief stopever in the playtest section.

It's all in Hunter's hands, though his reaction on seeing your deckplans was: "Wow! Nice!" or something like that. I think if we can, we will. It just remains to be seen if we can.

I'm not sure what the other artwork requirements are going to be. I'm doing the world maps, but beyond that I don't know.

What I would like to see:
All equipment, weapons, armor, vehicles and ships illustrated.

Filler art that actually has something to do with the text.

Character art for all the NPCs

Animal illustrations

World maps

Deckplans of all interface vessels, plus the three starships most likely to be used by PCs: Thorez-class courier, Cambaceres-class scout, and Pegase-class merchant.

Whether we can do all this is unknown, given that there are space/cost factors involved here. But it would be cool.

Of course, if I hadn't turned in a 207,000 word manuscript, things might be a little easier. :(

I'd also like to recommend using Bryan Gibson. I liked his work in the original 2300, T4 and QLIs publications.

Nice - I hadn't seen your stuff before; I like the work a lot ... I've just started messing about with 3D programs myself but it's a bit of a steep learning curve with little time to learn!

BTW the link in the sig is still to your old address

I don't know, I am somewhat a purist because I do like the artwork of Invasion, Energy Curve, Beanstalk, the original Traveller 2300AD boxed set, as well as Aurore Sourcebook, Mission Arcturus, 2300AD boxed set, Nyotekundu. All were great covers, at a time when GDW was at its height...and if Marc would lend a scan of the originals for inserts in the books that would bridge the old and the new.

But, I would like to see BG to the tech side but definately new art for most of the interiors.
