A new Great Game ?

>Where in Australia are you Peter ? .... I'm down in Melbourne.

Sydney .... Burwood

Looks like recruitment is picking up .... a work collegue is interested in taking on the UK and my brazilian friend (or his uncle) will probably take on Brazil

Still need an (obnoxious) Frenchman and someone for India, Japan and Korea but we have 6 or 7 of the 11 countries I picked as "majors" spoken for now which is encouraging

I should have a lot more stuff on the website overnight too so its looking good for a start on the 10th

I'll keep an eye on this, but I won't be able to participate. I am very interested in how it all works out

I would certainly like to take part in a new "Great Game," and volunteer to play India. I must confess that I don't really know all that much about what's going on there, but of all the unclaimed countries you list, I'd say that India is one of most plausible future spacefaring powers, and there's always Wikipedia and the CIA World Fact Book for background material and pre-game orientation.

> I could tackle Austraila or Brazil ;o)

I'm hoping a Brazilian wargamer friend of mine agrees to take on Brazil but I wont here from him for a day or so

Hope you dont mind the occassional nudge from me personally (not as the referee) if you take on Australia ... since Im an Aussie

>Germany is fine.

Welcome aboard Backstab

Austraila it is then ..and I welcome a nudge or two to keep on track

Welcome to the game marginaleye !

>I'd say that India is one of most plausible future spacefaring powers

China and India already are spacefaring powers although China is a few years ahead of India. I would not be surprised to see both of them catch up in the next 20 years technology and achievement wise. they are both seriously considering moonbases and could (barely) achieve it now on their own

>there's always Wikipedia and the CIA World Fact Book

my two main raw data sources .... probably because wikipedia gets a lot of its raw numbers from the CIA factbook

>I must confess that I don't really know all that much about what's going on there

lots ! Just remember India is no more a monolithic culture than is the EU

Out of curiosity, how are you planning to handle Pakistan? I really don't see Pakistan as being "in the same league" as India, but Pakistan does have atomic weapons, and some ballistic missile technology, and a huge historical rivalry with India -- I could easily envision Pakistan straining every nerve and sinew to keep up with India in a no-holds-barred space race. Is somebody playing Pakistan, or will Pakistan be an NPC?

>Is somebody playing Pakistan, or will Pakistan be an NPC?

Unless someone comes along in the next day or so that wants to play Pakistan it will be an NPC

As an NPC a lot of what happens to Pakistan will depend on the India, China and USA players.

For example if 2005-10 were a game turn (we are starting with the 2010-2015 turn btw):
* USA spent 1 or 2 diplomatic actions on Pakistan to encourage stability
* China successfully spent 1 diplomatic action to encourage space co-operation
* India STOPPED spending diplomatic actions to encourage unrest there

If no-one does anything to Pakistan its stability rating will almost definitely fall during the turn, increasing its chance of collapsing or fragmenting to about 70%

Assuming China keeps encouraging their friendship with Pakistan and Pakistan hasnt collapsed, long term I see Pakistan riding to the planets on China's coattails .... much the same as Canada will ride the USA's coattails. Once stutterwarp is discovered who knows ?

A few questions:

How are you planning to introduce future technologies? To what degree will "PC" decisions effect when and where new technologies get developed? If a given country sinks a lot of money into the precursors or prerequisites of some future technology, will the "breakthrough" leading to that technology itself be more likely to happen in that country, and not elsewhere? Will there be a mechanism for controlling the proliferation of technology? Presumably, whoever stumbles on the secret of cost-effective fusion reactors or FTL propulsion will do their best to monopolize it as long as possible.

And can "PC" decisions shape the way in which technology develops? Let's say that some country decides to sink a lot of money into developing solar sails as a cheap and ultra-efficient (albeit slow and clumsy) in-system maneuver drive, but solar sails aren't a "normal" part of the "technology profile" of the vanilla "2300AD" universe. Is this research predestined (for "meta-game" reasons) to fail?

Or, to give a far more extreme example, suppose some country has no access to tantalum (due, perhaps, to an long-running embargo) and decides to research an alternative FTL propulsion technology that involves lanthanum and vast amounts of liquid hydrogen instead? (the TNE version of "Fire, Fusion, and Steel" does include design rules for several flavors of FTL propulsion, including both stutterwarp and the standard Traveller jump drive)

>Presumably, whoever stumbles on the secret of cost-effective fusion reactors or FTL propulsion will do their best to monopolize it as long as possible.

fusion aint going to be a secret cause theres 2 multinational efforts

Most tech will filter out over a couple of turns but like the ability to build an abrahms knowledge and machine tools are 2 different things ..... thus the "major project" lines in the budget files

>And can "PC" decisions shape the way in which technology develops?
Absolutely.

The NAM file in the wiki already has a few non-canon items snaffled from TNE FF&S on top of being a mash up of the original NAM and the 2320 file Colin posted. Since a lot of things are fairly freeform and several players only know the 2300 backstory but not starcruiser etc theres lots of scope

>Or, to give a far more extreme example

thats probably too extreme but a "ersatz" stutterwarp is certainly possible .... although you would probably not want to use it except when absolutely desperate

Konichi-wa Walrus-san and welcome aboard !

We are just about ready to start

the basic files are up on the wiki .... just have to finish the rumours/events for each player tonite and the "sequence of play" although thats hardly going to be important for the first few turns

snitchthewalrus and general tiu have not yet contacted me

Im hoping to get the 2010 turn back to people on 1st Feb so you need to be available to chat to the other powers and then submit your budget and diplomacy

Can you all please:

*send an email to schutze_games@yahoo.com so I can contact you directly
*state in the email whether you are happy for me to post the email address on the wiki
*tell me what (f you use anything) chat program you use

Send an Email to Peter, General Tiu and look at the web site again (hes done several updates) many of us have emails posted atm so you can email an individual directly for diplomacy ..and I am thinking he wants to process turn one next week.

>what's the time for any chat

even though yahoo and hotmail both have chat built in, apparently most of us dont use it

I can be contacted via email for any questions etc and if its work hours, chances are you will be able to contact me for a chat too

>he wants to process turn one next week

several players have sent in their turn 1 and it looks like a lot is going to happen politically. Have got results to send back those players but several items cant be resolved without input from laggard players

I've created an events / timeline page to hold the results of diplomacy so far .... not all of it player initiated. I'm thinking though that in future the older timeline items will have to become just a one line summary linked to either full item on the relevant country's page or its own wiki entry

If anyone is interested in joining .... its not too late .... Korea is still available and several other countries (like Canada) are good potential player countries

We made it through 2010-2015 without anyone trying to start a war !

Iran is very confused by everyone wanting to be nice to it:rofl:

I've sent the results of turn 1 out to everyone and look forward to seeing what everyone plans for 2015

I know Canada and South Korea are open ..Italy and Spain might be good candidates for players as well..
I am playing Australia and I think Peters Email Address is some where further down this list so contact him direct
