Zombie plagues

A party of adventurers is more or less trapped on a world. In the background a virulent disease is spreading through the population.

I don’t want to write a detailed epidemiological analysis as the main point of the plague is to build suspense and put the characters into a real bad place. Basically I am trolling for other zombie plague scenarios or ideas. :D
Mmmmm . . .brains

"Sliders" did an episode along this line.
IIRC, it all started with some kind of weight loss drug that dissolved body fat(oops, not enough testing there)and left the 'victims' craving any kind of fatty foods, like Micky D's cheeseburgers, french fries, and Roseanne Barr. EWWWWWW!

Virulent disease that's a combination of rabies mixed with the drug properties of PCP?

EDIT: That ought'a be 'super-rabies' as opposed to regular rabies.

There's also an old JTAS (the print version) adventure that featured a plague that among other things caused marked receding gums which looked like growth of incisors, an iron deficiency that resulted in a craving for red meat and IIRC blood, etc. Might have been explosive hair growth, maybe fingernail growth as well. The net effect was to make it appear that the plague victims were turning into vampires and werewolves.

A quick bit of googling reveals that this was "Day of the Glow" in JTAS 16.

For a more imaginative and terrifying 'zombie' scenario (well, technically the dead DO rise again...) read Peter F. Hamilton's Night's Dawn trilogy.
