Your Foreven Sector

What is "your" Foreven sector like? Does it resemble the standard starcharts? Is it the same one charted out decades ago? How does it diverge? Or is it completely different?
 
Mine uses the blank charts, and there is only one small polity developed so far...the Svarvati.

So far, I have one subsector with fairly significant detail and two others that I have overall ideas about but haven't mapped.

In my universe, Foreven is the subject of development and exploitation by several megacorporations. I used the setting and part of the plot from the video game Independence War 2 to quickly detail a large and complex pair of star clusters (The Badlands and Gagarin Cluster) that are isolated from the rest of the sector by a Jump-4 rift and from each other by Jump-3. The corps attempt to prevent the local economies from developing beyond Jump-2, which allows them to simultaneously exploit the systems' resources and prevent news of their oppressive methods from reaching the Imperium at large.

The Badlands are in what appears to be a supernova remnant (actually the work of an Ancient's stellar reducer) and have been settled for about two hundred years, but they suffered a brief period of isolation following a minor war with the Zhodani during which neither side was able to definitively claim the subsector. The Zhodani eventually withdrew in order to shore up defensive lines elsewhere. When the megacorps pushed their way back in thirty years ago or so, they found thriving Jump-1 economies, with numerous belter communities supported by a few breadbasket worlds.

The corps quickly moved to establish an infrastructure that is favorable to them, with a privatized X-boat system and starports that are ostensibly run by local system administrations but are almost entirely staffed by corporate puppets. One particularly dastardly corporation has equipped a pirate fleet to bleed off wealth from locals who are amassing too much influence, and also to hinder competition from other megacorps whenever possible.

Most of the systems in The Badlands are TL 9 or 10, with just a couple as high as 12 in some disciplines. It's largely a duct-tape and crazy-glue setting trying to evoke a bit of Firefly with a cyberpunk spin.

Politically, it's a bewildering melange of megacorp interests corrupting planetary governments, with system-level administrations attempting to cater to numerous independent space-bound factions and subsector-level government attempting to maintain ties to the Imperium without letting it have too much influence. The Imperial Navy has one base in the cluster, and it has deputized numerous local and corporate navies to supplement its forces, but most of the local brass is on the take.

The Piah subsector is the site of the Duchy of Foyer (an imperial client state -based on T4 pocket Empire). The Avalar confederacy (in the Avalar subsector) is a small matched strength neighboor in the Avalar Subsector, with strong Zhodani influence. The Umian subsector is the wild "adventure zone" where trader try to maintain a link between the Duchy and the Five Sisters Subsector.

I use the "Foreven License" map (http://www.farfuture.net/FFEForevenSectorReserve2008.pdf), with some particulars:

Economically Unappealing. Most of Foreven sector is difficult to get to and is expensive to operate colonies out of -- at least, more expensive than exploiting or developing worlds within one's own settled borders. There are a large number of systems, lacking gas giants, or water in any useful amount, or both (a true "dry" system), making travel, development, and life support more difficult.

Relatively Barren. There are a large number of empty systems, devoid of spacefaring cultures of any kind. Many of these are still not surveyed.

The Zhodani Consulate. The Zhodani Consulate's border is wishful thinking. Though they claim worlds in eight subsectors, in reality this is at best their sphere of influence. The Consulate has tried -- and failed -- to extend its reach into the sector.

The Third Imperium. The Imperium maintains an IISS "base" -- actually more of an outpost -- on Hollis. It's a four-man listening post with one Scout/Courier; staff is rotated on a periodic basis. The Navy has no current interest in Foreven, beyond maintaining situational awareness and staging its operations from bases in the Marches.

Avalar. Avalar is a known human world, in about the center of the sector. It is an early spacefaring culture (TL8). They can't build their own jump drives until 1120, and the Avalar Consulate itself doesn't form until the year 1100 + (10 x 3d6). They are willing to trade with outsiders.

Reidain Subsector. The Reidain Trace is a lucrative trade route, best suited to jump-2 ships. Jump-1 is possible but two "bottleneck" systems control very limited fuel supplies and will charge an arm and a leg. There is no TL above 11.

Oases. There are (were?) a few strong, fiercely independent, likely xenophobic world-states scattered well inside the sector. Over centuries, tentative contacts were made -- and lost -- with some of these worlds. Most knowledge about these contact missions has eroded into legends and mythology.

Silk Road. There are a few known routes through Foreven, linking the Marches with Far Frontiers. 3 parsecs' worth of fuel is required to make the journey. Weapons are also required. The Sword Worlds bought a squadron of Broadsword-class mercenary cruisers to run these routes.
 
My Foreven is tentative and much less than half finished. I do have settlement maps that show the early growth, beginning with a big colony fleet with Germanic speakers evicted from Ephraim/Diaspora (at that time named Fünftreich) during the Pacification Campaigns. There are several non-human minor races, including the Irari from GURPS Aliens. Also a copy of Jack Vance's Big Planet (named Lebensraum).

In 1105 the sector has a neutral (but friendly towards the Imperium) confederation called the Weltbund. During the 5FW a group of Weltbund member worlds led by the world Avalar staged a Zhodani-backed coup and turned the free-wheeling Weltbund into the tightly controlled Avalar Consulate (thus conforming to both the Paranoia Press version and the later canonical version).

My Foreven? I provided a "reading list" of sorts for my Foreven in this post

My Foreven is the Great Game as played by New Kingdom Egypt and the Hittites, Republican Rome and Carthage, Imperial Rome and Parthia, Byzantium and the Caliphate, the Ottomans and Hapsburgs, imperial Britain and Tsarist Russia, the US and the USSR.

My Foreven is what the Levant, Iberia, Mesopotamia, Anatolia, the Balkans, and the Third World have all been at various times.

My Foreven is balkanized. Not only are multi-system polities rare, but unified worlds are a definite minority.

In my Foreven, the Zhodani Consulate border from roughly the first two Frontier Wars. The Consulate had patrolled, monitored, and occasionally interfered in my Foreven for millennia, but it was settlement by the Third Imperium that forced the Consulate to stake out a border. Even now, and much like the worlds in the Querion Subsector, many of the worlds inside the Consulate border are not inside the Zhodani culture.

In my Foreven, the Third Imperium and Zhodani Consulate each have an ever changing numbers of clients, allies, and friends on the multi-system, world, and national levels.

In my Foreven, the Third Imperium and Zhodani Consulate have the same permanent interest: That no hegemonic power arise within the sector.

In my Foreven, maps are always changing because the borders between worlds and on worlds are always changing, governments are always changing, and the names are always changing.

In my Foreven, those twelve Broadsword-class mercenary cruisers from the Sword Worlds are continually busy.

In my Foreven, the system where the Darrians conducted, or faked, their Star Trigger test is a place where scientific research by empires, governments, mega-corporations, and others becomes a blood sport.

In my Foreven, trade isn't UWP numbers, a few codes, a 2D6, and a table look-up.

In my Foreven, the players need to learn, pay attention, and act on their knowledge.

My Foreven is protean, inchoative, and infinitely malleable. Because of that, my Foreven can easily meet the immediate needs of the given session, adventure, or campaign.
 
My Foreven started back in the early 80s when I got the Sky Raiders trilogy by FASA. Which is why it was called Far Frontiers. I had no idea the Far Frontiers was officially another sector to spinward so located it nest to the Spinward Marches. Still do.
