Why use a Mass Driver?

OK, so the rounds weigh half the amount of HiVel CPRs. This still doesn't explain why I would chose an MD over a HiVel. At TL9:

12cm HV PWR:0 VOL:2.1m3 WT:2.1t CR:120k ROF:9
12cm MD PWR:20 VOL:2.5m3 WT:2.5t CR:350k ROF:1

Rounds for the MD weigh half the amount but have the same penetration performance. So, to get the benefit of half weight ammo I have to stump up 20MW in power (a MCr2 fusion power plant) to have a ROF of 1 instead of 9.

Err, I don't think so.

Well, Jules, there are a number of other benefits of MD's. A HiVel MD can (though the rules don't support it) be stepped down to function as a mortar.

That HiVel CPR will have one other thing that the MD won't: A smoke & flash from the muzzle.

IIRC, the Sig is Hi on the Hivels, it should be less for the MD, but I don't recall if it is less.

Also, a KEAP round for a HiVel is still explosive, but a KEAP for an MD is not; it's inert!

I think that the power requirements are probably broken.

There seems to be no sense or reason to them, graphically they display little relationship. It seems this may be another part of the design rules requiring correction.

I like mass drivers and do believe they should be superior to CPR guns. Perhaps if the power was divided by a thousand it would fix it.

I agree. MD's should be superior to an equvalent CPR at the same tech level (otherwise what's the point of them?).

So either power or ROF needs to be fixed. Dividing power by 1000 would seem about right.

Before using something for ammo in your shiny new MD, conider if it will stand up to launch force. Barrels of toxic chemicals will rupture on launch, causing the toxic substance to create a spectacular cloud around the barrel. Most PG aerial bombs are not designed to withstand forces involed in laucnhing out of a gun barrel unless they are intended for penetration.

Vegas:

Or figure out how much force it can stand and reduce power to that level. With attendant reductions in

Jules:
They are a different technology. They needn't be better in ROF (tho' I agree they shouldn't be that much worse), and ROF should be a factor of power input as well, not just design. (of course, the capacitor banks will have a maximum safe charge rate...)

But, in game terms, they shouldn't be THAT much different.

Ok, Aramis -- I know you know Striker better than I do...

Ideas here on fixing MDs in MT? Was this same discrepancy in performance displayed in Striker?
