Why did Ley Sector change?

I have an old CT product on the Ley Sector. I recently dug it out when I learned that much of T20 would take place in the Gateway Domain, which includes Ley. I also was checking out the map of Ley Sector on this website. There are MAJOR differences in the two -- system locations are different, names of systems are different.

Why the differences?

Judges guild originally had the licence for Ley, Gateway, Crucis Margin and one whose name I forget. Somewhere along the line the lost the licence and the four sectors were de-canonised. I don't know why, but the sectors with those names now were redone.

Correct. Judges Guild had the four sectors (Ley, Gateway, Crusis Margin and Glimmerdrift Reaches). Then their licence expired. So GDW redid the sectors with the release of the Atlas of the Imperium.

The most up to date map site I know about is http://maps.grandsurvey.com/ Anthony Jacksons map site.

Even that may not be correct, as the Playtesters asked Hunter to change some of the UWPs (A billion people living on a TL 1 airless, waterless rockball? I don't think so). I'm hoping that Hunter will release the .SEC file for the updated Ley sector once the T20 book comes out.

Go through the SEC files on Mr. Jacksons site. He is a very nice person and should be able to assist you in getting the proper data, as far as it goes.

Hunter and the T20 team have largely redone the Gateway domain, as in adding or modifing names and changing the UWPs (but not moving any stars). Unfortuantly, the format on the T20 site is not condusive to loading into database.

The file at Mr. Jacksons site is missing most names, and when I compared it to what I see here, there are lots of differences.

So, I hope that someday there will be a (sec or sar) file that is usable and acceptable for everyone...

Nobody except QLI has the set of data posted on this site. Hunter mentioned in passing he might make the updated Ley sector data available for download. My guess is after the T20 book comes out (or if you ask nicely) we'll be able to get it. And it will be canon as well.

when i joined the forum way back when ...i read the the ENTIRE ATLAS was going to be COMPLEATLY redone....it would be redone BEFORE its re-release. bcause the had been so many changes and "errors" had crept into it....does any one remember this???

I remember buying and going through the old JG Ley Sector book among their other products back in the day. Long story short: "Geez, Judges Guild's Traveller stuff sucks!" (that was the general opinion among Traveller players at my high school back in the early 1980's). The poster-size sector maps were cool, but that was about it. If GDW later replaced these troubled areas, that's fine with me.

As for the original question, "Why did Ley Sector change?", I have a strong urge to reply, "Because once you've been Leyed, you can never go back to your virginal state," but perhaps I'd better not....

I dunno about that, but altering already produced worlds and sectors seems to be a cottage industry
Witness the Dark Nebula sector. Now Ley is getting changed. Presumably the Gateway Sector that DGP came out with will also go to the rubbish bin.
IIRC Core sector had some problems when it came out in T4's Mileau 0. Certainly the Imperuim and Capital have changed since the original 77 Imperuim game and the first three adventures were published. Perhaps the only sector that you can depend on not to be dramatically altered is the Spinward Marches.

The THB is out, and I don't believe that the SEC files have been released for these four sectors. They probably won't be until after the Gateway Domain sourcebook is released. I can't wait, I can't wait!

Hope this helps,
Flynn

I don't see why it should be (except of course if there are individual worlds that need fixing (low-population garden worlds, high-population hellholes, strange X-boat links, tiny worlds with breathable atmospheres, etc.)). The material in MegaTraveller Journal 4 is copyright GDW, so there is no copyright issues involved.

I for one sincerely hope for a bit of revision done by a loving hand. There are a handful of worlds in the Spinward Marches that are in dire need of a canon 'make-over'. ;)

We have not changed Ley Sector nor will we change Gateway Sector other than to account for the time period differences.

The original material from Judges Guild for Ley, Glimmerdrift, Maranantha-Alkahest, and Crucis Margin sectors was de-canonized many years ago and replaced by updated information in the Atlas of the Imperium. Thus the Ley and Glimmerdrift Reaches use the original data from AotI, Gateway uses information from MTJ #4, and Crucis-Margin will be new material.
