Who plays?

I happened to wander through the PbP section of these forums and reflected on the good ol' days when people played games on this site. In the last year, there was just one lonely game posting.

So I'm wondering why the lack of interest.

There are people who claim to not have the time to even post a few times each week.

I know some people prefer "live" play. Face to face, live chat, video conferencing, and so on. The lucky ones can find people available to play at the same time on a regular basis.

RPOL and other sites do PbP, and most have more features than on this site.

Why do you think PbP is a fail here?

Limited functionality and avoiding board politics, those are the two reasons I wouldn't.

The PbP functionality on CotI wasn't bad several years ago, but they took away some things and we had to move our PbP over to another site. I have no idea about current functionality.

I have one PbP game that I play in and just started running a remote FtF game via Oovoo or skype which ever one is working best that day. Both are Traveller

I would be very interested in playing face to face in Los Angeles, or pbp on this or most other sites. Of course, not every campaign offered combines every player's preferences for rules system, setting, timeframe and type of game.

That all being said, I would play a game using LBB-era Traveller (prior to Megatraveller's publication), set in the Spinward Marches or environs, during Strephon's reign. But with the exception of an alien-based campaign such as Aslan or Vargr or Zhodani, I'd give other campaigns a pass.

And I've dropped out of games that met all those criteria, but just didn't maintain my interest.

Moved On, but still playing

That was a good game...

I have moved over to PBP games on both the Yahoo Groups and the MONGOOSE site. If you are interested in starting a game that is where I would recommend setting up. If you are looking to join, you could lurk and check with the refs/admins to see if they are looking for additional players.

Hey CG!

I PbP on rpg.net but seldom if ever see Traveller of any type there. What seems to be hurting COTI is that we're mildly inbred. The only folks who spend much time here are already Traveller players. Thus there's little possibility of bringing in new players. If you wanted growth I'd recommend a core group start here and then take the game where lots of other games are being played. The new folks can be sent here for the wealth of information and you bring new blood into the fold.

Make sense?

I've been looking at some of my characters and thinking of playing again.

Cosmic, my focus has been trying to get free money and time to re-enter a film career. So going to the South Bay Gaming Club by Apple is kind of a no-joy scenario for me. I wish I could, but even then there seem to be few Traveller players. I'm more into creating material than playing. I've had enough gaming for a lifetime, and need to get back to where I was years ago.

I still love Traveller as a discussion topic, and sci-fi in general, but there're other interests that take precedent.

Shiny! I will definitely lurk for a bit, and see what happens.

I'm starting up a PbP over on the GuildPortal site in the near future. It might be a homebrew chargen, and it's an ATU*. Not sure yet if I'll open it beyond my current RP circle - we'll see how it starts. :smirk:

* 8 sectors self-generated systems (from star out, LBB6 method), TL12max, lots of different nations/empires/federations/what-have-you.

Another idea is to run multiple groups that are lightly connected. For example, a ship crew that deals with ship stuff and a landing party crew that does planet side stuff. Maybe a business development team that's working new markets for the ship to run and buying on speculation.

This is especially doable with PbP as time doesn't have to lag quite so much if the parties are diversely separated.
