The biggest influence is the Dumarest novels by E.C. Tubb. They literally drip with that Classic Traveller vibe and are excellent to mine for many, many ideas. (I'm half-way through the series and have been taking notes for years).

Yea, I'd say the Jerry Pournelle novels are straight classic Traveller. They all have that military wargame vibe in space feel that dominates CT.

I'm surprised that Mr. Miller didn't make the Moties a player-character species. They're cute/unsettling/sinister at the same time.
