• Welcome to the new COTI server. We've moved the Citizens to a new server. Please let us know in the COTI Website issue forum if you find any problems.
  • We, the systems administration staff, apologize for this unexpected outage of the boards. We have resolved the root cause of the problem and there should be no further disruptions.

Where is the line?

For board purposes, it's whichever the char gen is... but if running a hybrid, it's best to be up front about it.

More fundamentally, Marc & I agree that CE is still Traveller enough to be part of the CotI mission.

When does a CT game turn into a CE game?

Does it depend on where you start?

If it is a private game, other than starting an argument on a message board or social media, why would it even matter?

Certainly neither Marc nor Jason is going to come to your house and enforce proper name usage.

Circle the one that best describes your game:
character gen - CT/CE
skill list - CT/CE
combat - CT/CE
"tasks" - CT/CE
ship design - CT/CE
ship combat - CT/CE
world generation - CT/CE
trade - CT/CE
equipment list - CT/CE
experience - CT/CE
psionics - CT/CE
computers - CT/CE
drugs - CT/CE
Now total them to find out if you run a mostly CT or CE game.

While I would say, for FTF, the above is appropriate, the fundamental baseline is the characters and tasks. And further, that's probably too detailed for use on the baord when not recruiting players.
Plus, you left out two options on every line: other edition (OE) and Houserule (HR)...
the most important point is to be honest with your players about what you're using.

You know one can ask a philosophical question without it being a prelude to a argument. Especially if you consider that everyone's opinion is valid.

Note this not a question about ownership. Nore should it be considered a threat to the IP holders Rights.

Looking at that list, I am in a bit of trouble when it comes to my version of the Cepheus Engine rules. I will be putting neither in a few areas. Combat will be D100 based, with one roll covering pretty much everything. Ship combat changed in a major way, as I am looking at simplifying it big time. Psionics, no. Magic, yes. It looks like when I am done, I will be off the forum.

Why? House rules are positively encouraged in CT, and its not as if there isn't already a Traveller magic system. It was in the Thieves World box set from Chaosium.

Basically a mage has a magic skill and it does whatever the ref and player agree it does - pretty free form :)

As to a % combat system I did that back in the day using RuneQuest/BRP, and have even dabbled with a d66 resolution system for combat.

CE allows you to re-write the rules to suit your game, so I don't see a problem with it being on these boards. Besides it is a pretty neat setting you are developing.

Just not on CotI. Or, he'll get a dedicated subforum for his one houseruled version of the game so that no one's sensibilities are offended by viewing a thread about his game in the wrong subforum.

You obviously have zero clue about the staff... all of us have long histories of houseruling. My own houserules for MT are enough to be a different edition.

If Timerover51's rules get a strong traction, he might wind up with a subforum... if (1) they're published and (2) either he or the moot ask for it.
