What's Coming in T5

Dear Marc,

I'm a freelance editor. I can do line revision, I can compile an index, I can proofread, and I can paginate. And I'll do it all for free if it gets T5 out.

Waiting with antici.....pation,

Just wanted to say... for a forum supposedly peopled by $35-spending T5 orderers, you guys sure are pessimistic about where your money's gone!

And if it's not...

You guys are a bunch of wussies, but replace that "w" with a "p"! The original hard science rpg, with as much hard science thrown as much as possible, and a feel that quietly, but emphatically, states, "science!" and you're all, like, "I don't know if it's going to be playable..." "... it seems to complex..." "I think a bell-curve is unnatural..." "if I have to learn some rules, it's going to make my wussy hurt...!"

Get over it guys! I'm psyched for this release! Let's get it released, then dive head-first into the fray! If it bothers you that much, come over to my house after I got it and see how you like it! I trained under a 5 1/2 skull rating ref, and liked it, because I knew we were up to the challenge!

"That's all I have to say about that."

Gany,

If you noticed, most of those posts were from Oct. 2007 and before. Otherwise known as before the pre ordering. Yet they pre oredered anyway.

They are excited, they just don't want everyone to see their inner glee.

I have never understood the mindset that holds realism up is such a high regard.
Well, people like to feel right into a game session, and there's what the movie-makers call "suspension of disbelief." If there's something that makes the viewers say, "that's stupid! ridiculous!" that ruins suspension of disbelief. For example, while watching the a particular action movie it all seemed believable - extreme, but believable - until he used a guy to break his fall down a stairwell.

A similar thing can happen in game sessions, where a breaking of the suspension of disbelief ruins the mood, and makes everyone remember "it's just a game". Just as in a movie, you always do know it's not real, but you like to get in the mood.

Having the game follow whatever you feel to be "realistic" helps that.

The real problem is that people often confuse realistic themes in a game's design with complexity. More charts and stats is not necessarily more realistic. In fact, the most realistic game would be one with no rules at all, and a very wise, impartial, and well-read GM

My fundamental problem with a 2d6 or 3d6 system is that a modest modifier can have a huge impact on the success chance. This severely limits the number and size of modifiers.
That can actually be a virtue, in that the GM doesn't mess about for hours deciding +/-1 here or there. As anyone who's ever visited a dvd rental store knows, having too many choices can lead to crippling indecision.

Amen. I looking forward to it, since it is my birthday present from my wife.

I can't say anything negative about a product I haven't seen yet. That being said, I'm a big Megatraveller fan and would have preferred an updated version of that system without the Rebellion....

I'll probably buy T5 as an idea book.

"If T5 is meant to be the advanced grognard toolkit for obsessive players and refs, and the Mongoose version an 'out of the box' play version, then on reflection I'm not unhappy with what I've seen so far. Still work to be done, but a 5 page summary does not an rpg make."

That's exactly what I heard and I'm really chuffed about it
The thought of all those crunchy bits makes me fairly drool in anticipation:.)

although saying that, I will probably still play Mongoose Trav'Lite:.)

Me too, assuming it isn't really just a mirage out in the distance that fades away when it is almost in my grasp.

I'm not a pure MegaTraveller fan, but I found it did a very good job of organizing and streamlining Classic Traveller into coherence, while expanding it in badly needed directions. Imperial Encyclopedia and Referee's Companion are still two of my most favorite supplements ever, while the Player's Manual is by far the best source for classic Traveller character generation.

As for T5; Marc has completed it, and let early adopters pound at it in playtest since January of this year. Errata were logged, compiled into spreadsheets, and presented to Marc. He is still working on that pile. Revised chapters have been posted, which in turn are pored over yet again, sometimes generating more errata (but less than the draft chapter). So T5 is Beta, perhaps.

Lately, new errata has slowed to a trickle. What's remained slow and steady (every other week or so) are conceptual issues, which sometimes prompt clarifying text to be added or passages to be rewritten.

So, have I understood it right? Mongoose Publishing keeps publishing The Mongoose traveller alongside Traveller5? The 5 just haves more props and is little closer to the Classic Traveller. it's like " Collector's Edition" for the nostalgics and hardcore-fans?

More like AD&D vs BECMI D&D

T5 goes into print, published by Mongoose, as a kind of "Advanced Traveller."

MGT remains in print, published and written by mongoose, and remains supported for use as core for other games Mongoose hasn't decided to build as standalones.

And MGT is more likely closer in look and feel to CT than will be T5.
