I went back and dropped some of my earlier skills from -1 to -0 to keep the result under the Int + Edu cap. Actually I should have done this years ago. I would have realized that I was at my skill cap and could have quit trying to learn more.:)

Overall, I think that many of the INT scores may be inflated since 777xxx represents the Physical attributes of the AVERAGE 18 year old ... and most people claim to be in better Physical condition than the average 18 year old.

I am skeptical and suspect age induced confusion may have set in, hence the 'inflated' scores. (It could also be like the fib of the size of the fish that got away.) ;)

The secret is to alternate between an increase in general education and learning a new specialized skill. What good is knowledge without the wisdom to know how to use it? :)

Str @ age 18 is not the peak for most men... Same with height.

Agreed, but I don't have the wisdom to seek more education.:)

And thanks for correcting the typo. Can't believe I actually typed Str + Edu instead of Int + Edu. That first only applies to Marines.

Well, maybe I failed another aging roll.

Stats for Average Joe

My friend (long-time gaming partner who lurks and occasionally responds out here) and I had quite the heated conversation regarding the stats for us every=day folk. I'm of the mind-set that our stats (now having reached 40) would be in the 3s and 4s, while he's of the mind-set that most scores would be 0s and 1s, with the rare 2 or 3 appearing on one's character sheet. Well, despite our conversation, here are my stats (with necessary commentary)...

Age: 43
UPP: 687BC9
Str: Below average; manage to pass with "Excellent" score on the Air Force Physical Fitness Test
Dex: Moves, generally, faster than peers
End: Can run 6-8 miles without issue; endure long periods without rest, if necessary
Int: 135 IQ
Edu: With a Master's Degree in International Relations, a Master's degree equivalent for AF-related education
Soc: Air Force Major and mid-level manager at the Dept of Justice

Background Skills:
Drive-0

Career 1 - Citizen (Real Estate Broker/Title Insurance Officer)
Duration: 2 Terms
Drive-0 (remains 0)
Flyer (n/a)
Streetwise-0 (yes, having grown-up in Philadelphia...quite useful!)
Melee (Martial Arts)-0
Steward-0
Trade-0

During the two terms, I advanced to Manager, gaining Admin-1, attended school +1 to Edu [Science, Social Science, History-1], and Broker-1. While handling large corporate clients, I developed Diplomat-0

Career 2 - Navy (closest thing to US Air Force ~ not Scouts, as I'm not a pilot)
Duration: 3 Terms (Still a reservist)
Admin-2
Leadership-1
Gun Combat-0 (Slug Pistol)
Comms-1
Computers-1
Diplomat-1
Language-0
+1 End
+1 Str
+1 Edu
[Science, Social Science, History-2]

As a Personnel Officer, I improved Admin in a number of different positions and gained valuable Leadership training.

Career 3 - Law Enforcement (Citizen)
Duration: 1 Term
Admin-3
Broker-1

Personal Skills:
Athletics-1 (Long-distance running)
Persuade-1

Admin-3, Science, Social Science, History-2, Athletics-1 (long-distance running), Broker-1, Diplomat-1, Persuade-1, Comms-1, Computer-1, Leadership-1, Athletics-0, Drive-0, Gun Combat (Slug Pistol)-0, Language-0, Melee-0 (Unarmed, Martial Arts), Persuade-0, Steward-0, Streetwise-0, and Trade-0

I see the stats this way:

0 = familiarity with the subject. That is, you have done it once or twice or read the book. You are not completely clueless.

1 = a very basic level of skill. You can do this task / thing but only in normal circumstances. You have little or no ability to handle odd, stessful or, emergancy situations.

2 = you are reasonably proficient. You can use this skill regularly and can handle most stiuations with some level of ability.

3 = you are very good at this skill.

4 = you are a master at this skill and have well above normal levels of knowledge in it. You practice it regularly and can handle most odd, stressful or, emergancy situations in stride.

5 = you are on the pro level and quite good at this skill

6+ = Wow! You are a top notch pro and well beyond average skill levels at something. You are destined for Olympic gold or a top slot in that skill.

I think that your skill descriptions need to move down (ie. skill 0 is better than you describe).

Skill 0 removes all penalties.
Skill 1 qualifies you to get a job doing that professionally (as in getting paid).

Beyond there it gets fuzzy in the rules and is very version dependent, but in the original Classic Traveller, working at something for 4 years (4 years x 50 weeks x 40 hours = 8000 hours) gains only about 2 x skill 1, so eack skill level represents about 4000 hours of actually doing something. At 30 years old, you would only gain a maximum of 6 job-related skills (most people would only gain 2 to 4 job related skill levels) and up to 6 hobby/life related skills (reduce for time spent playing, watching TV, being with your family, etc.) Earning 6 hobby skills by age 30 means 38 hours of practice/study per week every week, year after year.

Terms wasted at college tend to improve Education more than skills.

Keep in mind the definitions in Traveller...
Skill 1 is able to land you gainful employment
Skill 3 is equivalent to a graduate degree (Roughly a JD or MD, or MFA, or other long masters or masters-less doctoral degree)

Mine are already posted

wonder who will catch on:D

Mine:

Noble (or maybe Rogue)

778BBB
Age 43 (lost some on aging roles, was strength A endurance A from my mid 20's to mid 30's)
5 terms (or more!)
Mech -3, Rifle -1, Foil -1, Admin -1, Pistol -2, Assault Rifle -2, Wheeled vehicle -3, Shotgun -1, Dagger -1, Computer -1, Hunting -1, Survival -1, Horse riding -1, Elec -0

I see some people adding non-Travellerish looking skils, at least for CT, if that then I would add for myself History -2, Carpentry -3.

@ Dragoner

Given your skill-set, I have to ask what you do (or did) for a living that would warrant a "3" in Mech and Wheeled Vehicle. Again, my initial thoughts put me closer to Enoki's way of thinking, while my friend Foxx's position was closer to aramis and atpollard (my earlier write-up is based on the latter's assumptions). With that in mind, you would be a professional race car driver who jumped out of the vehicle, joined the pit crew and turned the car around in seconds...jumping back behind the wheel after the tune-up...

For Mechanical -3: A degree in mechanical engineering, owning a hot rod/race shop until 2008.

Wheeled -3: if it moves I can drive it, including various drag race and road race (scca, nasa) cars I built and drove myself.

What I actually did for a living is for the past 20 years, was woking for various design & build engineering/architectural firms as a project manager; good money until the housing bubble burst. Don't know how that fits Traveller skill sets though.

Maybe yes, some more admin skill. In my opinion, a trully great professional racecar driver is a 6, they can handle a machine in a way a fine arts painter handles a brush. Like wise, an experienced professional trucker is 4 or 5, I'm above average, but as long as you aren't a terrible driver (which there are a lot of) I would think you would rate at least a 1.

That's funny, I had a conversation with "Foxx" recently, and I asked him (since he has a much more conservative view of the levels than I do) "what do you say about 'bad' drivers if most people have a "0" in the skill?" His reply, "Zero means you take away the penalties...they don't even have the skill." LOL

To me, 0 represents at least familiarity with what you are doing, less than 0 is someone who doesn't know how to drive. Though at 0 they might be making too many (and failing them) difficult task rolls, something a better driver would avoid. :D
