What makes up a Jump Drive?

Hey Everybody!

So, what exactly makes up a Jump Drive IYTU?

Do you use a Lanthanum Grid?

Do you have a Jump Reactor separate from your main Fusion Reactor?

A separate fuel tank for Jump Fuel?

Any kind of homebrew add-ons to the Jump Drive?

Dameon

Jump Field Generator: 0.5% hull. Either Lanthanum Grid, or Irridium Coils.

Jump Engine Fuel System: 0.3% Hull. This is the pumping system
Jump Drive Motivator: 0.2% hull. This is the actual master control conduits for the hull grid or jump coils.

Jump Drive Reactors: 0.5% Hull per Jn. High volume, semi-efficient PP cells.
Zucchai Crystals: 0.5% Hull Stores the charge in the phased array, replicates it back at much higher rates and Amperages, in order of input. Basically a fancy capacitor system.

Let's see now. I have:

the Nuclear Fusion Pulse Detonation Confinement Chamber

feeding energy into

the jump capacitor array

which in turn powers up the

lanthanum jump coils.

The jump fuel is used during the initial nuclear detonation sequence, it is also used as a coolent, and it is used to form the protective hydrogen plasma jump bubble.

I like it. Nice and simple. Lets get back to whatever it was we were doing before this question was asked.

Also on my jump drive there is this big sticker that reads:
"No User Servicable Parts"

I think I'm not supposed to look inside.

Hi Dameon, to give more specific answers, (since I need a break from work here ;) )although I do like to black box the actual drive a bit...

A super conductor grid that helps create jump field uniformity. Specific material not critical. At TL+1 (+1 from when jump dirve discovered IYTU) the grid is no longer needed but does add a safety margin.

Do you have a Jump Reactor separate from your main Fusion Reactor?

No, and in fact IMTU I have them highly integrated. One of my hand wave "it works this way" reasons to avoid redundant/back-up jump drives that can be easily brought on-line.

A separate fuel tank for Jump Fuel?

Nope. I even allow the installation of tanks that can be converted to carrying cargo when empty, at added cost of course.

Not really. I consider the jump governer concept to be integral to all drives. I have a lot of homebrew on how jump works. An extensive outline is here:

And below that, in ultra-fine print, follows, "Operator attempts to maintain, repair, or otherwise fiddle with this drive, including but not limited to reading this sticker, constitute a breach of warranty."

;)

Does your jump drive also refer to a shrink-wrap license and that use of the jump drive constitutes acceptance of its terms? I thought I owned this thing. I paid good MCr for it. It says the terms are at MS Drive Works (a division of SuSAG Panimperium Corp.) sector headquarters, but that's 2 jumps away!

Dameon,

Good question!

Do you use a Lanthanum Grid?
No. I use lanthanum coils as in CT.

Do you have a Jump Reactor separate from your main Fusion Reactor?
Depends on what you mean by 'reactor'. If you mean 'vessel in which something reacts', then yes. If you mean 'device that produces eletricity/power that can be used for other purposes', then no.

A separate fuel tank for Jump Fuel?
Yes and no. Separate fuel handling and transfer systems definitely. A lot of hydrogen has got to move very quickly for IMTU's jump drives to work. That absolutely requires dedicated and specialized fuel handling and transfer systems. It doesn't also mean dedicated and specialized tankage is absolutely required too. Some ships have dedicated tankage and some don't.

Any kind of homebrew add-ons to the Jump Drive?
- CT fuel requirements.
- Zucchai crystals act as 'injectors'.
- Lanthanum-lined coils act as 'fuel modifiers'.
- Jump duration is not known until jump field stabilizes; i.e. no one outside the ship can know how long a jump will last.
- Initial jump duration determination is an estimate. Accurate duration; i.e. to the minute, is not known until >99% of jump duration has passed; i.e. within an hour left.
- 'Tension' between the vessel's jump bubble or field and the jump space dimension must be constantly monitored and adjusted throughout jump. Failure to do so results in misjumps at best and death at worst.

Have fun,
Bill
