What kind of musical instruments do you have in your universe?

In another solo-play story, this one way out in the Vargr Enclaves, a Suedzuk and Roth Thokken Vargr rock band have both entertainment and a warning for everyone they play to - something is coming. The band makes their way to the Julian Protectorate to save everyone from a galactic phenomenon coming rimward.
It wasn't a solo-play or anything, but I envisioned Vargr with their own morin khurr.
I think that there are really not that many different types of instrument; the differences are in the details. The details will definitely change the sound, though, but at that point you're looking at culture - a European lute isn't going to sound like a Chinese 三线 (sanxian), and neither will sound like the Caribbean/American banjo or its African antecedents.
Beyond that, you start to get into cultural notions of consonance and dissonance; the European 12-tone scale (in either its diatonic or chromatic mode, and in either its equally-tempered or just-intonation mode) is going to have a different sound from Turkish makams, Indian ragas or Javanese gamelan ꦱ꧀ꦭꦺꦤ꧀ꦢꦿꦺꦴ (slendro). There is a certain mathematical "consistency" to the notion of musical consonance; not every combination of notes will work - but the Bohlen-Pierce scale, which has almost nothing in common with 12-tone scales, still is consonant, though tonally "wrong" to an ear trained to 12-tone.

Two immediate instruments come to mind. One is the Jaw or Jew's harp, which is capable of producing a wide range of music. I remember watching Frazier Thomas play that on Garfield Goose and Friends while growing up near Chicago. The other is the harmonica or mouth organ, which is easy to learn and play. Walter Brennan, when playing the character of Stumpy in Rio Bravo has a ball playing one. Any instrument similar to them would be possible as well.
I would also have some ultrasonic instruments that the Vargr and Zarathustra Fuzzies would appreciate. They would likely appear as pretty much soundless to humans.

Since live performances are valued in the Imperial setting, strange and unusual historical instruments such as the glass armonica are popular IMTU as they provide an acoustic equivalent to electronic sounds. In terms of setting, "old Solomani classics" such as Dream On are played as lounge/nightclub music, a la Morgan James' classic rendition for Postmodern Jukebox:

- According to the Vilani Glossary and Grammar, there are the ala and the ubala, both religious musical instruments; the irkhamarzali, a Vilani lyre; ad the nakashim, some kind of bell keyboard with foot-powered drums.
- The Graytch (Traveller4), play the gun-jel.
- Percussion, woodwinds, and plucked string instruments are the most common among the K'kree, according to Gurps.
- The Hlansaai are supposed to be quite musical; Embla from Bu and Embla plays a hurdy gurdy.
- Signal GK has the gilyr, with 128 laser sensors hooked up to a synthesizer.
- In non-canon stuff, there's the yaverkvyuss, which requires two Droyne to play.
- The Luriani have the seven-stringed getre.

With this in mind, I created a short list of space-spacing musical instruments:
recorder, ocarina, harmonica, mouth harp, pan flute, tambourine, castanets, agogo bells, hand therumin, lamellaphone, claves, rhaita, and a pair of drumsticks turn many items into instruments.

Daily life in the Holy Hall is pretty simple: most waking hours are spent on maintenance tasks (virtually everyone on the shuttle can operate and repair most of the equipment on it), public and private worship and meditation, and such simple pleasures as chess and playing musical instruments. To most observers, the members of the cult appear to live blameless lives.

When I saw the title of Spartan159's thread "Symbols of the Imperium", the first thing that came to mind was cymbals in an orchestra.
What kind of music is in your game? I'm not talking just the music you play for your players, but what music do the characters encounter?
Do you have Space Opera in your Space Opera?
Does your Aslan play a didgeridoo?
Does your Llellewyoly stand on one foot and, with 4 arms, play an instrument ?
Does your Psion play a Mind Harp?
Do you have a Hiver band playing in your starport bar?
Is your K'kree music all about the outdoors?

A very peripheral project I have going is conceiving of truly alien and/or futuristic music. What would beings with other auditory sensors and cultural sensibilities create? Maybe not pentatonic-based and ratio-based music as humans prefer.
And maybe future civilizations don't in fact listen to techno.
IMTU music would be a mix of natural instruments, as we have now, with some longstanding traditions and other newer developments. Then, as now, would be a range of styles using all the tools of technology.
For spacefarers there would be a wide range of controller instruments to choose from (similar to MIDI keyboards, percussion, and wind instruments we have now) which could be patched into any system. A good player would carry a library of custom sounds on a memory chip, and be able to play anyplace, anytime. When musicians from far and wide met, they would all be able to plug in and go, sharing sounds and melodies, playing standard tunes or improvising and hybridizing a to their heart's content.
At the extremes of expression would be types of music which can only be experienced with the appropriate neural implants.
