What do your Travellers list as their Occupation?

Salvager usually.

Most games I'm active duty. Newest one SolSec Navy Lt on a colonial cruiser. Based on Doherty's books TO&E.

Traveller though IMTU would be legit. I assume Cleon I (Cleon II became one) saw a need to keep folk moving as entropy killed the 2 previous Imperiums and started the cult of Traveller in which talented folks were encouraged to move about and local officials encouraged to hire them for 'special' problems. Since the Imperium rules space and extrality zones this easily allows said Travellers to do what they needed and cross back into the Imperiums 'protection' essentially allowing them to get out of Dodge if they avoided getting caught by local governments while pro forma investigating the charges.

"need to keep folk moving as entropy killed the 2 previous Imperiums and started the cult of Traveller"

Interesting idea.

IMTU i have "travelling" as a known syndrome - not a mental illness exactly but a diagnosed condition like arachnophobia or vertigo - but the idea of someone trying to encourage it as anti-entropy is kinda cool.

Never had this in MTU but Retired or Semi-Retired would have worked.

With many of the "new" careers and such I like;

Wondering Minstrel
Intergalactic rubbernecker
or even
Just looking :D

One of mine is listed as a military trainer and projectile-weapons consultant, a former Marine Major of a wet-navy world.

Another is owner/operator/captain of a modified 600 ton Subsidized Merchant that was declared surplus to needs, and now operates independently, while sending in part of the profits. Then you have the crew for the ship, which is a bit larger to fit my Traveller Universe standards.

I am working up a Droyne Sport, with an Annic Nova-style ship, who is an exploration and contact scout for Chirper communities. The Annic Anvil operates a bit differently than canon, and does have 3 pods.

My last Traveller party listed....
Professor of Physics
High Council Member
Space Patrol Ship's Captain

The prior party was all "Employee of the Duke of Regina"...

One of my last characters listed his occupation as Detached Scout and Imperial Knight of the Order of the Arrow.

In my Traveller games the characters typically went down 3 routes depending on that first adventure.

If they mustered out with a Scout Ship, they started with "The Imperial Fringe" and became "Planetary Surveyors". They might get up to all sorts of shenanigans but basically the cover story (and one they were getting paid Cr 50,000 a pop) was that they're going around, surveying planets.

If they mustered out with a Free Trader, they were Merchants by trade. Again, they get up to all sorts but the linking saga is that they travel around, shipping cargo and selling stuff. This also applied to anyone with a Corsair; it was easy to convert it into a trade vessel.

If they didn't have a ship, they were Mercenaries or at least "Freelance Private Security".

We never had anyone with a lab or safari ship in the game.

I'm recently new to the system/community, hello! My first and current Traveller is a Hacker/Security experts focused on intrusion. He's also got a bit of robotics and remote operations but I'm still reading about those areas. Again, pretty new but I just bought Marc Miller's Traveller 5 PDF and I'm loving it!

Gev's Occupation?

After he mustered out of Artemis Security Services, Senior Scout (Courier) Gevaudan Cannagrrh, captain of the Sixth Horizon out of the Dzen Aeng Kho (tr: Society of Equals) in Gvurrdon Sector would have been a registered and legal Concubine slaver. See his entry in the Adventurers sub-Forum.

In the Society of Equals, (fan source Sourcebook: Gvurrdon Sector version), upwardly-mobile slavery is legal. As such, Gev would have to be listed as a Gentleman Slaver. The Gentleman is important as he is both an Equal of the polity but having run the gauntlet of the Fifth Frontier War in the Spinward Marches he considers himself - like others he met - to be a Gentleman.

He is not rough with his transported slave stock and thus has an easier time with the Concubines he deals back home. This is especially useful during Rebellion, Hard Times and New Era.

So, yes, Senior Scout Gevaudan Cannagrrh is a registered slaver of the SoE.

Had a player who once described his character as a "Biomedical Pharmalogic Assessor". He interrogated people for whoever paid the most; when that kind of work wasn't available, he was a ship's medic ;)

Have been generating entertainers and martial artists lately as bodyguards, stewards and palace guards for a noblewoman. Probably "Chamberlain" or "Handmaiden" are my two silliest job titles.

I use either what they are doing such as pilot, steward, bodyguard, consultant, or I use what they have certificates in such as Doctor, Lawyer, Bar Tender, Computer Repair etc.

Minor Imp of the Ministry of Information and Communication - gives lots of leeway for reading and getting to know "local" culture and such (i.e. spying - umm "streetwise")
