Virus Wars

Arsulon

SOC-12
I've never tried it but always thought it'd be a great campaign. I'd probably run parts of the War of the Quarantine and Abandonment: the PC's would fight a series of savage rearguard actions against Vampires and Vargr as the Regency struggles to evacuate its citizens to the Safe. Lots of pathos as the players are forced to fire on infected refugee ships trying to break the Quarantine. They could even elect to stay on the Wildside as covert operatives keeping taps on encroaching vampires, sadly, never to see their homes again (Codename: Firewall). As a surprise, I might rehabilitate the experimental A.I. aboard the Kininur (you know, the one in Shionthy, where Norris gets his Imperial Stationary from): as an A.I. itself with an organic core, you could say its dynamic enough to anticipate and prevent viral infection and maybe arm it with anit-viral measures itself (SOME programmers have to come up with SOMETHING for Pete's sake: its just a computer virus). That'd make one hell of ship for the players. Maybe give it to them as a treat after facing down the vampires at Catacomb, or something.

Has anybody ever set a campaign during the time after Virus hits but before the RC?

Seems that a Virus Wars scenario might be quite fun (perhaps the players have picked up a Cymbeline chip as some sort of talisman to protect them from Virus?)

My first campaign in TNE went thataways, transitioning from Early Rebellion to Hard Times to TNE (via Survival Margin's conversions). I ran the Nail mission to Gushmege, but with two J-6 Ti courier ships, not one (double the chances for success). Players wound up getting to the Gushmege Depot after the first ship had made it, and left...
Made quite a splash with Lucan's Navy.. deserted on the first mission--never looked back! wound up in Promise subsector (before Vampire Fleets), had to gear down to a J-4 engine (TL-13)but at 2ktns, they "were the Sh@t" for a while. Misjumped for lack of repairs in 1131, as the worst was happening all about them. Woke em up in 1190...welcome to the Dawn League! Took it from there...

Doom Hunk wrote,"Nail Mission with *two* ships... now why didn't I think of that before? :) Brilliant.

Well Doomhunk,
It's like this: Depot Gushmege wasn't going anywheres. Figured twobirds better than relying on one. Just didn't tell the two crews each was going. Typical (Arch)duke Norris subterfuge I thought. The second ship was insurance, if you like, that the mission (which was stressed as IMPORTANT enough to lend out a J-6 2ktn TJ courier to Players (an anathema to some GM's-"WHAT, an UBer ship!? Are you Mad?!"  )for those disintegrator parts for the Voroshilef Batrons ( a TL-13 pre-Tigress dreadnaught I believe).

Liam,
Two ships passing in the night is a great idea. If they knew about each other they might be tempted to support one another which would draw undue attention; likewise, if the Vargr became suspicious of the coreward traffic (unlikely, given the chaos and inconspicuous class of ship) and captured one of the crews, they would know nothing of the other ship. By the way, how did your crew of faithful Denebians fare in the RC? Did anyone try to get home?

;) Now yer catching fire!

Three settled down with their salvage fee (5%) of ship's value and started a Spacer's bar for Relic remnants like themselves on AUbaine. Added a casino later with a locally rolled up PC's Dad (Sean "Lucky-Dice" Eagan's Dad, Micheal). Two volunteered for Dawn league missions, but were turned down. They Later went on the Hunt for the missing twelve. The Ship's Doctor got herself employed at the Aubaine Main Hspital in Vrasstadt.
One of the NPC crewman killed himself; Several NPC's took employ in Aubaine's system navy after a long serious drunk.
In 1201, the two former Scouts offered their services to RCES, along with a handful of lancers, and Hijacked the Montezuma "Fleet". They got to keep one Gazelle CE (with fuel tanks welded on), renamed her RCS Green Hornet (painted neon green with black stripes).
They helped form the salvage company "Jumping Jack Flash Interstellar Salvage & Mercantile, Ltd." (they specialized in ship salvage, the big credits--as the RC kept saying "we haven't enough ships!").
Their Old TJ was modified later by the RCES for Colony work (and J-2 drives installed).

Did anyone try to get home?

Nope. Their few encounters with the Vampire Fleet gave em cold feet. haven't worked out the RC-Regency meeting yet (MJD & Coy. will be along shortly in October I hope to cover that). THAT is a significant event. Go Home? Or stay?
