In LBB5.80, Pulse Lasers have a -2 DM on damage rolls (meaning they inflict more/heavier damage due to the way the damage tables are set up). However, Pulse Lasers increase their code factor more slowly than Beam Lasers (3x Pulse Laser = code 2 while 3x Beam Laser = code 3, for example). On a side tangent, pulse lasers do more damage but are less likely to hit, right ?
30x Pulse Lasers = code 6
30x Beam Lasers = code 8
Higher code factors have improved chances to hit, penetrate defenses (sandcasters) and inflict automatic critical hits on ship hulls under the code factor of the weapon.
Pulse Lasers are therefore often times "less accurate but more damaging" in the LBB5.80 combat paradigm.
LBB2 combat uses a different system to differentiate Pulse Lasers from Beam Lasers.
Prospecting in asteroid/planetoid belts requires use of a Pulse Laser rather than a Beam Laser for carefully controlled mining, surveys and exploration, since the Beam Laser cannot be "fine tuned" enough for the delicate work needed by (most) Belters.
