Uniform & Rank Badges

Mithras

SOC-14 1K
I'm a bit of a fan of the Osprey books showing uniforms of various military armies from various historical periods.

What I want to see is 'Osprey: Traveller Militaries', but no luck yet!!

Are there any previous threads on this, or has anyone done work on illustrating uniforms or rank insignia of the imperium? I'd have a go myself but would worry I'm treading on toes ...

Wasn't there some consensus on the uniform colours of Marines and Navy? Based on the imperial sunburst?

Help!

Just last night I sketched in pencil the designs for the sleeve cuff indicating the different Imperial Navy ranks on officer dress uniforms. For the work uniform, there will be small imperial starburst pins with 2 designs and they will go on the collar like so:

I'm using MGT
1 Ensign 1 x Design A
2 Sublieutenant 1 x Design B
3 Lieutenant 1 x Design B and 1 x Design A
4 Commander 2 x Design B
5 Captain 2 x Design B and 1 x Design A
6 Admiral 3 x Design B

Possibly the center of the star in Design A will be hollow and in Design B filled or they will differ in color. I have not sketched these out yet.

The remainder of the uniform will be very simple, sort of like the star trek uniforms but without the chest emblem. There will be a pocket on the forearm that has a seethru window. You will be able to see the display and press the buttons of any device within the pocket. (I'm not sure if this should be a pocket on the uniform or an additional piece of uniform that slides over the forearm)

Canon 3I JIS rank insignia are 1-3 small sunbursts in silver, then 1-3 large in gold, for the O# O1-O6 of HG.

Me too :D

Awesome!

Tell me you designed those figures, and have a website full of Third Imperium uniforms.... :)

Great stuff. My jaw hit the keyboard

EDIT: Checked your site - what a great time I had!

JIS=Joint Imperial Services. There are references to it in MegaTraveller, and the starbursts are shown on several illos in MT as well. It was detailed out in Traveller's Digest 15, in the article on the Imperial Marine Occupation of Terra. (It also details that two systems of enlisted insignia are wide-spread... the dots in box and the terran chevrons lifted from the US...)

There are several references scattered throughout canon to a unifed system of rank, and I seem to recall a "hard-canon" (GDW) versus the (DGP) "soft-canon". (Soft because you can reference it, have to account for it, but may not quote it, in official materials. For reasons of IP ownership, the DGP materials are often developed specifically away from, so as to invalidate them, and avoid potentially cash-stripping litigation.)

I looked at those pics and I thought....
"what a great targeting pattern! and how perfectly located!!!!"
And just for those night raids they are glow in the dark too!

And as for me doing uniform illustrations for each service I have already thought of having a go at this (being an avid collector of those Osprey books myself) but typically everybody has their own take on these (see also the Imperial Navy Uniforms thread currently running), maybe I should work up a few to my own ideas & then get the Citizens feedback and adjust accordingly...
(Like it's going to be that easy ;))

Yes, people have different opinions. As you say, posting in a thread to get feedback is great. When finalized, the images can be sent to the Imperial Museum of Art Gallery HERE AT THIS SITE and people who are not artists will have something to use.

I'm not a great artist but here's what I've done IMTU:
What you have there is wonderful and you should proudly post it in the art gallery of this site. I think many people would find it useful and even those that don't will still appreciate what you have there.

Looking at your website - I am speechless....

Hemidan's uniforms (except for color) are similar to what I expect for service dress and office uniform.

Hemidan's uniforms are a little Star Trek for my taste, but its all personal taste isn't it.

In my minds eye (read MTU), :

Navy uniforms are severe, and dark blue.
The Marines are in SWAT black, to match their combat armour.
Scouts, I see as a khaki brown and cream. Tropical, laid back-feel with lots of local variation.
Armies, well, that varies from world to world.
Merchant lines have their own uniforms, but these are often utilitarian; Nostromo, not Virgin Airlines.

Sunbursts? Is there canon regarding colour? Yellow for Navy, Maroon/Red for Marines? White for Scouts? I'm sure I've seen some kind of canon post on this.

I'm sure I've seen line drawings of Marines and SCouts over the years I can cannibilise for my own uniform projects, but honestly I can't ever remember seeing a single line drawing of an Imperial Naval officer or crewman ... isn't that odd?

I am thinking like Japanese Imperial Navy Uniforms from WW2.

Probably different colors, depending on terrain. Like khaki in the desert, Green in jungles, swamps and wooded areas, white on ice planets.
Scouts, I see as a khaki brown and cream. Tropical, laid back-feel with lots of local variation.
One thing I would like to see is what I call Martian Khaki, a rusted red version of desert khaki.

There is no reason we have to be be restricted to modern era uniforms. Victorian military styles may be cool. Heck, maybe even go back to Napolionic (-2sp) Uniforms. And we also have Eastern cultures for ideas. perhaps special forces dress like tricked out ninjas, right down to the split toe shoes.

It could be as simple as cargo shorts and a polo shirt, with the company logo on the pocket. The ship is a climate controlled enviroment. Long sleeves and full trousers might be a good idea if there are a lot of hard surfaces and "gotcha" to grab at you as you pass thru the ship. Or hot equipment.

When I was on submarines, our uniform was what we called poopie suits. Dark blue full sleeved overalls. Our name and rank indicated, but nothing fancy. Who was gonna see us aboard ship anyway?
