Ultra-tech food preservation

What advances in food preservation techniques do you think might be appropriate to the various Traveller ultra-tech1 levels?

Some ideas:

* Better taste.
* Less bulk.
* Cheaper.
* Enhanced rehydration (e.g. add water to small brick and get large self-heated meat log with gravy).
* Longer shelf life.

Hans

1 I'm trying to promote the use of 'ultra-tech' as a term for technology in advance of our own but available in the Imperium (i.e. 8 or 9 to 15) and 'hyper-tech' as a term for above-Imperial technology (i.e. 16+). This is not canonical; it's just a notion that I like.

Probably all of the above but, you can only take out up to 100% of the water and not sure where we stand at the present.

All of the above.

All of these are good.

It is this a have issues with. It should be hyper-tech for better than our current stuff and ultra-tech for above Imperial Maximum. Hyper always comes before Ultra. :devil:

I'd add, packaging that is edible or that it often becomes unnecessary or something like that. Eliminating packaging or making the packaging part of the meal reduces weight and waste as well as space.

Using exotic atmospheres and chemicals to preserve the food. These prevent deterioration of the food and could be designed to be either harmless or dissipate on opening the package (if in one).

Packaging that self-cooks / heats the food. You don't need another device to heat the meal. The packaging can be activated to do that instead.

Design for use with vac suits, environmental suits, face masks, or for use in exotic or extreme conditions. Your lunch is fresh, hot, and yummy even as you work in a vac suit in space...

And does the Vac suit have a means of reprocessing the body waste when it occurs? Or do you wear a large diaper?

I can't find anything to support that. In the context 'hyper-' and 'ultra-' both means much the same, and I can't find any internal ordering of the two terms. I use 'ultra-tech' because of the GURPS books and 'hyper' because it is another word that means much the same.

Ultra does tend to be top in most english hierarchies, as its root is the same as ultimate.
Hyper merely means beyond.

Looks like another of those terms where ignorance1 has changed the meaning of the root, then.
1 My ignorance, I mean. I was completely unaware of the existence of English hierachies where 'ultra-' was ranked above 'hyper-'.
As I explained, GURPS Ultratech includes stuff just a little bit above what we have today. For compatibility I use the term for the Imperial tech range. I'm not going to change my mind on that score (until and unless SJG changes the name of their books to Hypertech 1 and Hypertech 2 ;)2).
2 Or TTPTB3 says otherwise.
2 The Traveller Powers That Be.
I think a different term for technology beyond the Imperial range would be useful, but I'm not stuck on 'hypertech'. If anyone has another suggestion for something over and above 'ultratech', feel free to propound it.

Now you've opened a whole new :CoW:...

I am also wondering how you get the food paste your helmet, unless you have something squirted into your mouth from a tube. Maybe something like Boost or Ensure. Having had both, not sure I would highly recommend them. They are nutritional, but then, so are unheated MREs.

A cassette with an external trigger would allow food pellets. Think stuffed pretzels, only not of need crunchy, or sausage bits. A popup delivering it where you can move your mouth to it.
