Traveller miniatures

There have been three 25-28mm ranges, one 15mm range, and three ship ranges. The 15mm range (and another 15mm range that started as a homebrew Traveller universe) and some of the ships are still available, but the 25-28mm ranges are currently OOP.

Not licensed, but available in 1/285 (6mm) and in 25mm, Ground Zero Games has good travellerish minis.

Many thanks - what are the 15mm range?

I forgot that they also do 15mm - same factions as the 25mm.

Dirtside 2 is their 1/285 (6mm) sci-fi armor rules.
Stargrunt 2 is their 25mm sci-fi men rules.

I keep forgetting (since I've not played SG, just DS and FT) that SG is dual scaled - 15 and 25mm.

RAFM has the ex-Citadel 15mm figures in production as generic sf figures. Including a nice ATV and a grav tank.

They also did the TNE ships but don't have them or the moulds anymore.

Megaminis did Vargr, K'kree, Dronye, and Newts but sales on the sets didn't justify continuing production.

Megaminis has since shut down completely, The principal of the company had some odd ideas about miniatures and the business of producing them. I don't know if he sold the 28mm aliens to Ad Astra, or if he really did destroy the molds. He was big on "limited edition" releases.

I managed to forget that there was another licensed 15mm range from Martian Metals, but they were pretty primitive, and burned when their workshop did.

Hmmm... has anyone thought of 3D printing them ?
I've done some 3D printing of ships with pretty good results. Unfortunately as Aramis said there are copyright laws that apply and while it is absolutely legal for me to make minis for myself it wouldn't be legal to sell them.

Before you suggest any kinds of legal dodges such as selling Scout ship models under the title 'Planetary Survyor' or distributing the file so people can print their own I recognize that there are such tricks but I have no interest in persuing them. For Traveller to survive and grow there needs to be incentive for the people who make the game and I do not want to do anything that might adversely affect their income stream, even by a small amount, without their permission.

This isn't meant to come off as 'neener, neener, I've made some models and you can't have them'. It's meant to tell you that while I unfortunately can't provide you with the models (and I have tried communicating with various people in the past but I believe they are unable to give me the go ahead because of contracts they have signed) it is possible for you to create them yourself and to produce excellent results through 3D printers (I feel like my models have a much higher level of detail than the older miniatures that were produced).

I don't violate copyright.

I was wondering if anyone had done their own and were they successful ?

Could you qualify what you mean by the question? If you're just asking if people have made their own figures and been satisfied with the result than the answer is a yes. If you're asking if anyone has started up a company doing this recently and turned a profit that's a whole different kettle of fish.

Cobalt 1 has some awesome Vargr, they're just called Ar-men. I think Black Scorpion has them now. Black Hat has them now, the Cobalt Mercenaries make pretty good vacc suit combatants but you can't get the bubble dome helmets anymore. :(

What I haven't seen are decent cat people for Aslan. Hundred Kingdoms had primitive cat people and Kryomek USA has some cat people with no pictures.

Regarding the copyright implications, if you make minis and they're good enough to sell, talk to Far Future. I can't speak for him, but I would guess he'll both allow it and want a "piece of the action" (apologies to Star Trek fans).

I've actually tried communication with Marc, not just to get permission to put up the models on Shapeways but to give the models to CotI so that they could use them to raise funds. I've also offered a couple of other suggestions (though I don't recall specifically talking about going through Far Future).

Unfortunately he hasn't been able to give me a green light on any of my suggestions. This is not at all surprising since another company currently has the rights to produce some Traveller ship minis and very, very often those contracts would preclude Marc from giving the rights to someone else at the same time (no company wants to spend lots of money regenerating interst in a game only to have another company come in with permission to produce models once things are on an upswing).

So unfortunately it is what it is. Maybe with luck they will decide not to renew their license and Marc will grant me permission (it would not be unreasonable for him not to grant me permission even then since it would devalue the rights if someone else wanted to license them) or Marc will ask for an ammendment to their contract the next time it comes up for renewal. In the meantime I can always help people to make their own ship models by giving them my observations and experience.

If it's the Attack Vector guys, I expect it's only a matter of time. They've been dead in the water for a couple years now. Still, I wonder if they do their own casting? If enough fans drove a big enough truckload of money up to their house and demanded they produce some Traveller minis I wonder if they would.

Sure it'd be nice to make money selling Traveller minis but I'd like more of them regardless.

So 15mm, 25mm, 28mm, or 33mm? Personally I'd like to see some fillers for the 15mm line RAFM has but they're mostly good, just need Kkree and Hivers and Ithklur and when it comes to vehicles there's an embarrassment of riches out there in 15mm Khurassin and Ninja Magic both have a nice Trepedia stand in.

On the other hand I'd like stuff that goes well with my 25mm Traveller collection which is pretty complete, though I did miss the RAFM figures I got most of the ships. I like the size of RAFM's ships even if they're a little squashed / cutesy at times. They fit well on hex grids and leave the big stuff for the big stuff. I'd also like to see a good range of 25mm vehicles, in hard styrene if possible.
