• Welcome to the new COTI server. We've moved the Citizens to a new server. Please let us know in the COTI Website issue forum if you find any problems.
  • We, the systems administration staff, apologize for this unexpected outage of the boards. We have resolved the root cause of the problem and there should be no further disruptions.

Traveller map just went down. (20 Jan 2013)

Not sure why (I haven't been touching the site); looks like it's had several small outages today. No unusual traffic spike to cause it, though.

The site is a hosted ASP.NET application. When anything goes wrong - usually too heavy a load causing the image rendering memory usage to spike - it just restarts, leading to 1-2 minute outage. I'm exploring alternative hosts or technologies, but none are terribly appealing at the moment.

Just went down again. 1432 hrs CST. I was looking at the USTRAL Quadrant. There was an error at the bottom of the page showing Unavailable.

I agree. One of the most incredible tools out there for Traveller and the best prop to reel in new players!

Don't scare me like that, people!

Seriously though, my monitoring service shows the site uptime is still much improved since a hardware upgrade last November. The site seems to have an issue where after periods of heavy use it will hit some server-side resource limit (memory or CPU) imposed by my provider and be restarted, which results in a 1-2 minute outage. Per monitoring, this seems to happen 1-2 times per day at this point, which I'm still not happy with.

After a house move coming up in a few weeks I'll be looking at upgrading the server software to something updated this decade. Hopefully that will improve the situation further, and beyond that I have more options.

Well, for a wonderful and free service, two outages of approximately 4 minutes total is better than most of the paid services I run on my work PC. So bravo!!

That was me, sorry. :o

Where else makes pdf's of trav maps? I thought it might have been kicking me off.

If it happens, it's not personal. :) Just wait a few minutes and it should be back up and running. The PDFs should actually be less work than the image map tiles, though, but possibly there are nasty memory leaks in the libraries I'm using. Again, I'll have time to investigate after an upcoming house move.

I apologize in advance for my abysmal ignorance, but how does one go about getting it to work? Of do you need to be using Windows?

In what way is it not responding?

Does the site not load? If so, what error does your browser report?

Or does it not interact with you in the way that you expect? If so, what is the way that you expect?

As I was more curious than anything about what it showed, I will not worry about it.

Works on my version of Firefox. Does it need cookies enabled?

So this is the thread where we post every time after we have visited Traveller Map.
(B.t.w. it worked fine for me now.)

Just in case Joshua's uptime monitor doesn't work.

Please don't start a similar thread for The Zhodani Base. Sometimes it may happen that it doesn't work. If you care (and think I haven't noticed), send me an e-mail or if that doesn't work, contact me on facebook.

Even if you're not interested on the Traveller Map, IMHO would be kind for your part to point the problems you've had with it (either here or by PM, if you don't want to be involved in public discussion), so that Inexorabletash might work on them and so be a help for others.
