SOC-12
And by this, I mean the Roman Republic cum Empire. I've used it before but I wonder what folks think. Here we go:
1. Smaller sized, say, only a sector? Two sectors are settled space; two are "lands of the barbarians", i.e., other human groups who are outside "Rome" but are under it's influence (or just at its border).
2. Social representing different family ranks at birth (that is, when the initial stats are first generated). For example:
Soc F = Blood of kings. Descendants of past royalty now long dead and barely remembered in the foundation of the Republic. Also Patrician.
Soc E = Patricians (say, first 100 members of the senate, certain to make Consul and Censor in their careers)
Soc D = Senatorial (say the next 100 senatorial families, or particularly outstandingly wealthy families with blood connections to the top tier, at least one past member a Consul)
Soc C = Senatorial (they make the cut in lineage, i.e. at least one past member a Praetor, sure to become Quaestors in government).
Soc B = First Centuries of the Equestrian Order (the top of the Knights, past members occasionally sat in the Senate as Quaestors or Tribunes - backbenchers).
Soc A = Equestrian (enough to squeak in as a "noble", hope of the senate but don't hold your breath).
Soc 8-9 = 2nd class
Soc 6-7 = 3rd class
Soc 4-5 = 4th class
Soc 2-3 = 5th class (don't even get a vote in elections)
3. Social as "position" in society (that is, what is earned, or fits the character's story - remember, merely because you hold a certain social, doesn't mean your kids will, though it helps to move them and your family up). All terms are 4 years in length (see what I did there?
):
Soc F = First Man (or Woman!). Unofficial lord of all. By virtue of clout, influence, etc. This can go on longer than 4 years, of course...or less.
Soc E = Censors, ex-censors. Must have been consul first. (Acts as advisors/reviewer of economies - also paired for each subsector, if possible).
Soc D = Consuls, ex-consuls. Must have been praetor first. (Two consuls per subsector, ruler therein. After that, one may run for Censor).
Soc C = Praetor (handles administration of star systems or planets, depending on size). Must have been a Tribune first.
Soc B = Quaestor, Tribune of the Plebs (planetary administration, country administration, other "imperial duty").
It is possible, then, to move through the ranks (I assume through the Noble career as in Supplement 4 of Traveller - I haven't looked at MGT yet), or as a reward for service in other places (like the Navy).
I figure, in this universe, we'd have a frontier-like quality outside the empire proper, and inside it, plenty of backstabbing and nastiness as people try to move their way up the line to be First Man/Woman. And since there is no "emperor" per se, there is no permanent power, only the power of family.
