Torus Worlds

A toroid world is featured in Larry Niven's novel Protector.

IMO the Brennan Monster is a great model, and maybe "the" model, for Grandfather. In any case a world like that just screams Ancients anyway; it would be a disappointment to find a world like that without Ancients.

This is the kind of planet that I find interesting, as it is basically the way Mercury is depicted in Space: 1889.

One of the problems with such planets is heat dissipation. The other is that fact that part of the reason Earth has a biosphere is because we have an incredible magnetic field generated by the fact that our iron core world spins, and that that spin generates the magnetic field that protects us from the blast of the solar wind.

Otherwise we'd wind up looking like Mars, which is essentially what happened to Mars even though it had water flowing freely on its surface at one time.

Still, that doesn't mean that such a world couldn't exist in Traveller. It would make for an incredibly imaginative write up. Reality verse fiction; pick yer poison.
