Titan

Exotic IMTU.

What did Mr. Miller et al. rate it in Scouts?

I'm pretty sure Titan's atmosphere is A in Scouts, but I don't have my reprints handy at the moment - I can check it later today.

And there you go - thanks, Sigg Oddra.

Now, a person knowledgeable in the planetary sciences might argue that this is a defect in the UWP atmosphere ratings: while the rules specify that an exotic atmosphere requires oxygen tanks, the conditions on Titan are such that only a vacc suit would provide adequate protection from the low pressure and deep cold of the satellite's surface.

To which I would reply, true enough as far as it goes, and this is where the referee's knowledge of the interaction of the planet's size, atmosphere, and position in the star system can be used to make a reasonable inference about the protection required for travellers venturing out on the surface of the planet.

What low pressure? The surface pressure on Titan is higher than on Earth. What humans would need is protection from the cold and some oxygen to breathe.

Ye gads, you're right - I know I read that someplace before, and totally spaced it (pun intended ;) ) when I posted.

Thanks!

Special Supplement 2, Exotic Atmospheres, mentions Titan in its description of 'exotic' atmospheres with methane components. However it also states that 'exotic' atmospheres have "fairly normal pressure and temperature ranges". It goes on to mention, in the section regarding 'corrosive' atmospheres, that temperature is the most important factor other than the mix of gases in determining corrosive effects. ie, requiring the use of a protective outfit.
Based on this description, Titan could be considered 'corrosive', unless you own a really thick overcoat!! ;)

Not only that, but Ammonia and Methane are corrosive to flesh in certain concentrations.

I never liked the "on a 12, the atmosphere is an A" roll in Book 6.

I always used the following house rule:

Roll 2D, on a 12 exactly the atmosphere is "A" in the Habitable Zone or "B" in the Inner or Outer Zone.

The only time I allowed an "A" atmosphere was in the Habitable Zone.

One side effect was that on the star generation tables, I had to modify the +4 DM for ATM 4-9 to be +4 for ATM 4-A.

I also borrowed the Knnn from CJ Cherryh's Chanur books and made a TL17 Methane breathing race that didn't play well with Oxygen breathers. All ATM A worlds in Chartered Space were Red Zoned because of the Knnn.
