ThingMaker Coatings

I'm not holding my breath for an answer as ThingMaker isn't the most popular thing in these forums. This could be the first mention of it!

Selecting the Construction of an item gives a value that is used in other calculations. Mentioned in association with Construction is the ability to add one or more Coatings to enhance protection.

It's not mentioned anywhere in the rules, but there is a fractional value associated with each coating. I'm going to make the assumption that the Construction value is equal to the base plus the values of any coatings added.

This will affect mass and protection calculations.

Actually, Art, I have always thought that Thingmaker was one of the more useful things in T5, as long as you did not use simple dice rolling, but used it as a building block tool. I will have to look at that.

Unlike the other makers, ThingMaker has no provision for random thing creation. You select the important parameters, and it calculates others for you.

You might want to look at the example of applying a waterproofing coating to a wooden crate at the top of page 162 in the T5.10 rules. The coating adds one kilogram to the weight of the crate, which seems a bit excessive. There is not cost addition given in the example.

For that matter, given the proper connections to the sides of the wooden crate, you can come up with a fair degree of watertightness with no additional coating. A dugout canoe would not require a watertight coating to be watertight.

I might have to spend some time looking at Thingmaker.

Thanks for pointing that out, that answers my original question. The example uses 0.2 for Container in the formula but 0.2 + 0.1 for Container with Sealed coating. So I guessed correctly.

Cost is completely up to you in ThingMaker. I recommend using published data on things to estimate the cost:

It effects the Sealed Protection value. Not sure how that plays out when gaming.
