The Traveller Art Thread - Discussion

I think the confusion begins much earlier with those illustrations in the MT RSB ;)

And I like your proposed fix.

Oh, and Andrew.

Thank you for that link to Jesse's site. It made me realise I'd never looked at the news section
The stuff in there is fantastic.

Are any of you talented artists (and you know WHO you are!) --- possibly available for hire to custom-texture a ship for me?

I'm starting a new campaign soon, and I'd like to have a nicely-colored illustration of the main ship that my adventure party will be using. It will likely be a ship that already has an existing 3D model (based on existing CT designs). All I would wish is that it be retextured with a custom paint job and the hull marking has the NAME of the ship as chosen by my players.

errm I'm not rich or anything...so I probably cannot pay very much. But I always store a few dollars into my PayPay account just for these possibilities.

Incidently if that cruiser was too close to a certain big trade mark vessel, what are we to make of the illustration of the Cleon class battleship in the Library data book?

That was the first one that came to my mind but I couldn't figure out the name difference. I thought maybe it was somewhere in the MT Library book. Anyway, way back then I don't think Lucas Arts was a big and mean and certainly they wouldn't have gotten much out of suing Traveller. By the time MT rolled around things had changed a little. Of course it's just an idle thought, and probably not the real reasons at all

Sorry about that....Never was quite clear that the News section has the newest stuff (i.e. it's all REAL old at the moment :( ) and isn't cross-linked to the gallery. Always check the news section ;)

And thanks

Jesse

Tank you very much :)

The tex is just a rusty metal pic from one of the sites you gave in your tutorial. It does work nicely. I think I need to stick a few graphics on the hull, though - it looks a little bare compared to the turret.

"I think I'm growing."

You're just big-boned...

I prefer using photos to proceduarals. The noise and colours on them are much more natural and convincing to the eye.

Definately add some decals. Add some wear to the panel edges aswell. Subtley though, try to avoid glowing blobs of silver!

Another trick is to darken and lighten the specular on different panels so you get a varied ammount of reflection on each panel.

The only other thing I'd suggest is that the shadows are too harsh. Try adding some dim blue and brown fill-lights to create radiosity.

May I humbly submit a link to my old college friends web site which features a selection of digital artwork pieces some of which are Traveller inspired.

http://homepages.tesco.net/~mark.hirst/bryce_intro.htm

He and I played much Classic Traveller in our college days, and we are on and off collaborating on a couple of ship designs (LBB 5 - High Guard) based around his artwork.

I'm sorry I have nothing to offer. As an engineer art is like a foreign language to me. I do the CAD work on the deck plans when I can find the time.

Very nice indeed. Something about military vehicles, tanks especially, is that they also end of cluttered with things bolted on to them. I can understand this not being done to a grav vehicle though.

Now if you've got time....

Wow! There are some gorgeous compositions in there. How much did your friend actually model and texture himself?

Scarecrow: I'm sorry I don't have the technical details, although I do agree with your sentiments.

Mark lists two e-mail addresses on his site and I'm sure he won't be upset if you contact him direct.

If those addresses are out of date drop me a line via e-mail or PM through this board and I'll get in touch and ask him to contact you.

I use a different e-mail address for Mark when we're working on odds and ends but I'd rather not post that into an open forum if you'll pardon me.

It all started pretty much as a hobby for him, and still is to a large extent, but his last e-mail to me indicated that he had taken on a commission to do an album cover for an American Heavy Metal band!
