The quintessential traveller books?

For the newbie, I would recommend the concluding chapters of the Traveller Book. That plus the Imperial Encyclopedia. Only problem both are out of print but the good news, fairly widely aviable.

Then I would move on to some of the Traveller's Digest Articles such as a Short History of the Imperium. Moving on to then the Traveller Adventure before concluding with something the original TNE rulebook or Milieu 0. And lastly, buying something the Rebellion Sourcebook or JTAS reprints would help make a nice glue to stick it all together.

Lexx, before, rushing off to buy into GURPS, you might want to consider that there has been some talk of revising the whole gurps Traveller line into a single sourcebook called the Third Imperium. Which promise to consolidate all the loose rules of gurps traveller (GT) into a single form.

Well, I won my first GT book some time ago, starmercs. Since then I've gotten rim of fire, a very badly used copy of GT, and am now getting far trader.

It's all good, actually. Since my novel will deal with trade and mecrenary operations I needed those sources.

Until then, I have actually tracked down a source that claims that it is in "Good" condition but they want CND$90.00 for it.

If anyone wants I can find out further details, just send me a private message. I would consider a trade for something equally valuable and pay out my pocket. E.g. Imperial Designs Corporation Building (for an example of what I am looking for in the Corporation Building Plans) & Gazelle Deckplans (the example of the Gazelle Deckplans that I seek)...pun intended.

If you are willing to "troll" eBay, you can regularly find both The Traveller Book and The Traveller Adventure, each for $20 or so. Quality, will of course, vary.

Personally, I consider TTB and TTA to be the quintessential presentation of "Traveller".

I don't say this as a "CT grognard". I say this because The Traveller Book has, IMO, the best mix of rules, background, setting, and adventures in a single volume. The Traveller Adventure adds in some more background and setting details, all carefully added on to that established in TTB, along with a campaign which is useful both as a full campaign, and as several separate adventures.

While we can all pick apart the rules, whether the adventures were any good, how much sense the campaign makes, etc. (And I include myself in that. I had a huge problem figuring out how to get the campaign started!) But despite all of that, those two gave the best presentation of Traveller I have yet seen. It included some of everything needed to run an interesting game, and gave enough to make it work.

Actually, the price for CT products keep going up...in lieu of the printing delays at FFE. I had expected a stabilization.

Ebay is the worst place to get Traveller stuff, although, I have had some success using it. I prefer dealing directly with people which makes the boards & the Traveller Trader a better arbitrator. Plus, quality is assured dealing with Swordy.

I don't know. Looking at the places I have found that have Traveller stuff, eBay seems as reasonable as not. While I do agree that some non-reprinted stuff is going for stupid money (e.g. Atlas and SMC), from what I have seen TTB and TTA are still readily available for reasonable (~$20) money.

MNy essential CT list (or what I take with when people ask me to play CT under them, and then when they ask me to run for them)

Players: Bks 1-5,7. Supps 4, 8, and 11 (Citizens, Library Data A-M and N-Z)
Ref: Bks 0-8, Sups 1,2,4,6,7,8,9,11,12 (1001 Char, Animal, Citizens, 76 patrons, Traders & Gunboats, Lib Data A-M, Fighting Ships, Lib Data N-Z, forms and charts); add either sup 3 or 10 (SM or SolRim) for setting.

TTB is great replaes Bk1-3; often take AM 1-8, as well, and TTA.

TTA is lousy for one-offs. But it does have campaign replayability for those who only made it most of the wa through.
