The Clothes Make the Man

Squid

SOC-5
Hello, long time lurker and first time poster here.
While I am waiting for my FLGS to get T20 I am enjoying myself and hopefully my players with MT, only to realise that they have gotten a tad to... fashion aware. I cannot recall reading very much about the clothes on style (presumably fashion is different on different planets, making a stylish fellow on one planet look an utter fool on another).

Primaraily my query focuses on nobles and military: For some reason I have gotten the idea that nobles wear clothes akin to 18th Crntury fashion, with that lacy collar and all (maybe the pictures in GT forced this image) and for some reason the marines wear kilts.

Now I'd like to know, either by link or by setting straight over this forum, if this is... well, true? Does the marines wear kilts? Does the noble wear puffy shirts?

Not the most serious topic, maybe, but the devil is in the details...

Thankful for all replies, even nones which does not help me ;)

another question is. so noble marines wear puffy kilts??

Only in the presence of the opposite sex.

But Squid, more less seriously, none of this is "canon", which is why the kilt discussion is "In My Traveller Universe." Make it up as you go. I think there is a good deal of evidence that normal clothing consists of variations on the trousers/jacket/shirt model.

The ubiquitious Boiler Suit (Coveralls), usually grease stained and with 'BOB' stitched or patched on one breast pocket is likely common too. ;]

I had a human minor race that go nude whenever they are in shirt sleaves environments (ie all starports). (Counts as an Odious Personal habit for GT - question mark on the Odious)

One merchant guild that were extreme fans of skin tight lycra(sp) - it was a virtual uniform with them - not very flattering for the vast majority of Fat Merchants, but hey.

My Vargr tend to wear fairly skimpy cloths - but whatever they wear is loud and clashes (A Combination of Charisma and my Vargr being colour blind)

I wonder if we can get a GodKing to move this discussion to "My Traveller Universe".

Yeah there is lots of variation available here. I agree that for many industrial or work environment conditions there would be minimum clothing requirements. Even the baggy, judo-esque uniforms that were seen on the Old fogeys Star Trek would work in place of one-piece overalls. Trickier bits would be does your character wear anything under their vac suit? Do you need some sort of suit liner? I would even look at foot coverings. The USMC issues green socks, while the Russian Army issues soft pieces of cloth that you wrap around your feet in place of socks. The USMC issues tee shirts and combat blouses (shirts, all the Corps members out there help me with this one), the outer portion of which buttons all the way up the front. The Russians routinely issue a tunic that only buttons up for the last 5 buttons or so. You could certainly have variations from domain to domain.
(Walking out onto limb here) Women, when they dress up, want to be attractive and perhaps draw a bit of attention. Given the options with gravitics and holographics, I can imagine that there would be costumes that would put what Jennifer Lopez wore to the Oscars a few years back a run for their money.
Another question that would help you when designing NPC’s. Are there cultural or religious reasons for certain garb? Maybe an Imperial Noble ranked, as a Baron is also known as the Pontiff on her home world. So she carriers a crook and miter, wears a chasuble and stole, etc. Nobles who were former Marines might wear puffy kilts (noo, whae yee got hidin’ under there laddie?) or some civilianized version of military garb.
IRL when the military is doing well or is popular, men and women have jackets that acquire epaulets, forragere cords and cord at the cuffs.
During long periods of peace the trends might soften and loose those hard lines.
During WW2 cloth, and indeed any supplies for luxuries, was hard to come by. Suits tended to be closely tailored, with out wide shoulders and simple lines. Once the baby boom and post-war prosperity began in 1946 the collars widened, the shoulders became padded and the drape of trousers was much greater.
I think that you could have a crusty old noble wear his old uniform, a young and untried noble wear softer and more unisex clothes, (ala Star Trek the motion picture). All in aid of distinguishing the ages and classes. Young Vargr and Humans and Aslan would wear cross-cultural and cross species clothing just to piss of their elders. The Vargr just never get over it (kidding!). Space crew would probably tend to be the most uniform in appearance, given that they often keep coming to the same ports and resupplying from the same places. They have job based clothing requirements and often come from service backgrounds that made the clothing choices for them.
The planet based citizens who work in environments that allow some choice would likely have a local "dress-down" version of traditional garb. Everyone would have their "Sevenday" best hidden somewhere, even aboard ship.
IMTU I always assumed that service decorations were commonly worn with civilian garb, not just with uniforms. Like you often see in photos of old American Civil War veterans. Or pictures of Russian Great Patriotic War Veterans (WW2).

For clothing, my group (when I inflicted Trav upon them) leaned toward star warsish type clothing. Not the hair styles mind ya, just the clothes. Our Vargr wore cammies. Purple lightweight pants and a brown vest with lots of pockets. And purple shades cause he was cool like that. ;)

Depends on the quality of players you have. I've had those that could've cared less. I've had those that gearheaded their wardrobe onto spare sheets under their Character sheet!

Methinks its one you have to play by ear..specially when they (the PCs) ask-"Whats the dame we're lookin fer wearin' again?")
Then you tell them, and they shoot a line at her, she looks em up n down (usually down)and as GM you ask em what they're wearin!
:D ;)

Usually I ask for what they're wearing when they try to sneak into some place or bluff their way past someone or whatever. A well-dressed fella has a better chance of getting past the bouncer at a fancy party while a shabby-looking guy has an easier time talking to a fence than a guy wearing overalls with "Imperial Navy, we kick your ass" printed over them.

I've asked for clothing descriptions ever since they tried to sneak onboard an cargo ship dressed up as a catholic priest, rabbi and in tailcoats with the great plan "let's tell them we work onboard!"...

I recall gaming unshaven wearing dirty canvas deck shoes, no socks, baggy chinos, a hawaian shirt and a white naval "saucer" cap without a stiffiner.

"Dick Cochrane" wore the exact same thing, except his hat had scrambled eggs on the brim. Oh, and the TL-13 laser pistol. And the whisky bottle.

He wasn't impressive, but he could count on another PC coming up and saying, "Is there a problem, Sir Richard?"
