T5 discussions at rpg.net

Consider this: TNE sold fewer units than MT, but made money overall on the line. That is, from an economics standpoint, a success. The COMPANY failed. A few products were bad in the TNE line, after the company was already committed to a policy leading to their ultimate failure as a continuing company.

So Guilded Lilly being bad is indicative of the line beginning to falter... but the line as a whole had been a success.

T4 didn't make a real profit. When IG folded, they left artists and writers unpaid, and product that wouldn't move. There are rumors of Ken having made money upon it, but I doubt they are true. Marc got some money out of it. The printing companies got their money. But the line overall was in debt when IG died.

Ken Whitman engineered the sale of IG to Courtney Solomon/Sweatpea. While I know no details, I also have no doubt that Mr. Whitman made back his investment (and probably more) on the whole thing before moving to his next "project".

I've seen no proof of Ken making a profit. It would not surprise me, however, if he did.

So, more nearly back to something I'd like to hear about.

Malenfant's point stands. A new Traveller is only going to function for two modes: (1) something like Avenger Classic Traveller (check it out!), or (2) something new.

New rulebooks are for new rules. Expansions on current ideas that help the player interact with his world. Rules which help supplemental material focus on its subject rather than patching a weak core engine.

For CT, career-based or "lifepath" chargen was the fundamental new rule (although, was there a precedent?). For MT, the task system was the fundamental new rule. TNE's was probably the conversion to the House System. All versions of Traveller extended and refined rules, but the fundamental rules are the most powerful. They are core to "when" and "why" the player rolls the dice. Where the player character meets the universe.

With that in mind, what could Traveller add, as an organic extension, to the rules? We already have at least a hazy idea of what Traveller, in most of its versions, is like in general. How could it GROW?

(grin) after thirty years, all we have is a hazy idea?

adventure modules. lots of sequenced adventure modules. in t20. preferably with CD's ('scuse me, dating myself) DVD's of (hazily) traveller animated short stories to stimulate the imaginations of the gamers.

I'd have self contained rules light + adventure + library data + new equipment/starship/vehicles.

Something a referee and group of players could run easily, but still retains usefulness when the adventure is over.

Linking the adventures into a loose story arc or campaign is probably a good idea, but they should all be playable without any previous material.

The core game rules would then expand on the light version, give lots more equipment, ship design, world design, advise on building scenarios, campaaigns, worlds and whole universes.

Marc should release 'The Grand Imperial Campaign' (like Greg Stafford's 'the grand pendragon camapign). He should state the entire history from the ancients to the new era, detailing all the lost facts (was Strephon killed or not) and let the players create their own milieu. I'd buy a 260page book for Traveller if Marc made it 'Official and final'. Just imagine.... :)

There's nothing "Final" about GPC... Greg is already threatening to put stuff in 6th edition.

"Final" and "Greg Stafford" should not be used in the same sentence. I mean, Vingans, really ...
