T 5 Has arrived!!!!

To be technically accurate, any such import attracts import VAT, currently at %15. The handling charge is imposed by the royal mail as their 'admin' fee for dealing with this. Customs duty is only payable if the value of that duty exceeds £7, and I would have thought that was unlikely in this event.

But I should find out the reality of this very soon, having just ordered the CT cd:D

I know the feeling. Mine was my birthday present from my wife. The joys of sharing an PayPal account. Smuggling birthday, Xmas, & anniversary items is so challlenging. Of course not challenging as smuggling the spear I bought her one year past her.

Huzzah!

My copy of T5 arrived here, in Sweden, on the 23rd. :)

Now, if only my wife would let me open the darned thing. Well, okay... yes, I admit, it was ordered as a Christmas present. But that was LAST Christmas. :p

Prepare for a bill. I was charged £11.50 import duty on the CT CD!!

Unfortunately I worked out that I wouldn't be charged any duty when I ordered it, but then the UK pound went into freefall and by the time the CD arrived in the UK it was definitely in the taxable range.

Having said that I am raelly really pleased with the CD and seriously considering the MT CD.

Hey, Gruffty!

"All the bankers gettin' sweaty beneath their white collars
As the pound in our pocket turns into a dollar"

Isn't that lyrics from some The The song?

Late , late , late to the party, and still trying to decide if I should budget for T5. It's a balmy 2 degrees farenheight outside with snappy wind and unbearable wind chill. Makes it nice to be inside, with 2 acres of Big Iron to keep me warm in my snug little data center.

Seriously though, does anyone have a clue how far off in the receding future T5 is from being published?

Judging from the time it took to put this alpha out, and how raw the docs are, at least a year if not longer. The docs are nice and if you have a lot of background make some sense, and you get a strong feel for the style, but they are very raw. There are some great ideas in there they just need work, or be added on to one of the editions that are actually in print.

I'd have to say no: depends on how much effort is put into it. A lot of people have little rules shifts and changes they want done, but these aren't necessarily the problem. Marc M obviously has a pdf editor, and knows how to use it, because I've seen some stuff get cranked out and to the forum in the span of a day.

If he sets aside 2 months, looks at all errata, cracks open the docs and gets to work; gets the pseudo-finished product to the forum for a good once over at the 1 month point, it can be published-ready by the end of the 2 months. I'm putting together a live playtest in Denver, first with my gaming group, then maybe one semi-public one, arranged on the forum, perhaps at one of the conventions here.

Probably?

Probably within the year. I have faith, I know it can be done, all the material necessary is already there. If you buy the cd, you'll get a giant dollop of Traveller, probably about 5 times what the proposed T5 Black Book editions would hold, and I do believe we'll have access to the finished pdf products since they post up cleaned up versions. That, 2 fresh ink cartridges, and a ream of cardstock will get you the finest collection of the latest and greatest sci fi platform ever devised! (or something like that ;))

*shakes head*

Actually, I find one ink cart and a ream works out about fine, but the addition of cardstock, now that is genius.

Thanks ganymede, now I know how to print a real tough version of my printouts now. :D

EDIT: And of course as usual, I agree with everything else gany said before the tree killing parts...I just like them best. :p

Just a point of economy, ditch the Ink jet for a laser printer and the print costs drop by about an order of magnitude.

Instead of Card which tends to be brittle, get yourself a good 60+ lb paper it will give a longer life to your printed doc.

If you want annoying amount of durability laminate each sheet.....

Actually, we (my group) use 58-lb paper, but yeah; if you do laminate them, take em to FEK (Fed-Ex Kinkos). It'll cost ya, but all that time you would've spent on it you just saved for more important things, like reminding your woman why VD rocks!

The itching burning sensation?

/ka-snip & thanks for the advice/ reminding your woman why VD rocks!
Now really asked the old one, did I miss one of those filmstrips? :p Last I checked VD was an unpleasant thing, you kooky kids and your new fangled morals.

Ah, being single and talking smack. :D It rocks.

And quit with the laser printer, I heard already, jeez, do you people forget I am a gamer, not a rich person. Hell, I got the printer/scanner I am using now, as a gift from a friend of mine. Still, I might have to look into heavier paper.

well, for the price of maybe 3-4 ink cartridges you could probably get a laser printer. You'd hit the break-even pretty fast & be ahead money-wise in short order. A little search and you can find them < $100. You can find color laser printers < $200. But enough of the laser printers already - get back to your deforestation...:)

Add another $100 to the price and he can get a duplexer that will print the front and back of the page and then uses 1/2 the paper and also saves more money (long term)! (Since he seems insistent on printing every page anyway).

open a office supply store credit card, and probably get 10% off & several months to pay interest free. So figure paying an ink cartridge a month for 6-12 months & he'd be way ahead...but I think I've derailed this quite enough by now (says the man with 2 active ink printers, 1 active laser printer, and a couple of unopened ink printers sitting on the floor as well as networked printers galore in a different state. They just give those things away!)

OK, just for information my The last Laser Printer I bought was under $80US. So the difference in prices between Inkjets and Laser printers have pretty much disappeared.

An for the record My 1st Laser printer was a friends cast off....

T5

Well I am very happy to have it.. granted it is in a rough form. A lot of great concepts and Ideas are presented: the sophants, clones and such. I was really touched by the remembrance page..my uncle Paul who brought traveller into my life when I was eleven recently passed as well. Bless Mark and the crew. It really is good to see a comeback of my favorite game. I am a CT fan and I think the T5 material is a much needed and welcome addition.

Best wishes

dumb Question...

I have a "dumb question" and this post seems like one to ask it. "Which version of Traveller is T5? I currently have T20 and Mongoose Traveller? Doing so brieff calculations: CT, Mega-Traveller, Marc Millers Traveller, GURPS: Traveller, T20, and now Mongoose Traveller- or is there another version out which I have yet to see?

It's based on GDW/FFE's releases. CT, MT, TNE, T4, T5.

Traveller 5 is the name of the latest version of Traveller (being designed by Marc Miller), that is currently in the "Beta" stage and is being playtested and screened for errors by members of this board who ordered a copy of the pre-release CD, which I believe is still available at FarFuture.net.. They are calling Mongoose Traveller MGT around these parts.
