STAT THAT SHIP! PART 8

bryan gibson

Absent Friend
NRSSCapitolClassFINALgridcopy.jpg

A Capitol Class cruiser/ carrier, she weighs in at 7000 Dtons, and is the backbone of a Novaya Rhodina Task force. One of four in her class.

As always, +/- 10 percent. Its primary mission is force projection, and carries heavy firepower as well as fighters/assault craft. This one could be interesting!

The only tweak from standard T20 design is the unpressurised vehicle deck. Its a kludge to get arround the all or nothing nature of having launch tubes.

Nope but it may take a loooong time to launch (or recovery) them all.

It's usually 1 carried craft launched or recovered per turn per 10,000tons of mother ship.

Unless you have launch tubes which speed it up to40 (iirc) carried craft launched or recovered per turn.

Or (in HG at least) if your mother ship is a dispersed structure it may launch (and recover?) all (externally) carried craft in a single turn.

BTW, that looks more like a dispersed structure to me so go for it I'd say

Yeah, what Dan said.

Under T20 rules a ship can launch a single sub vessel every 20 minutes per 10,000 dTon of parent vessel.

Or, if it has launch tubes, it can launch all vessels under launch tube tonnage in 20 minutes. No limitation on numbers in T20, carry a 1000 20 dTon vessels and a launch tube, and they can be all launched near instantaneously.

The problem I had, is that with only a 1200 dTon hangar (1560 dTon after being fitted) a 60 dTon launch tube takes up about the same space by itself (1500 dTon for a 60 dTon launch facility) and even a 20 dTon launch system takes up 500 dTon.

So assuming that the 1200 dTon hangar floor is covered in light fighters (80x 15 dTon) it takes more then 24 hours to launch all of them.

With an unpressurised hangar I would allow launch at a hybrid rate between internally carried (1/turn) and externally carried (all/turn) but with all the fun and exitement of doing most maintenance, weapon loading and repair in vacuum. Hence the kludge I was using.

Thinking of launch tubes (to go a little tangental) I am thinking of an array of vehicle locks, say 5 in a row. All have a constant vacuum pump running, but ships do not wait for a complete cycle before going along the chain. Assuming that the craft being launched takes 1/2 the volume of each lock that would mean that:

Vessel moves from pressurised hangar into first lock: Current pressure around ship 1 ATM.
Second door opens: Pressure becomes 1/3 ATM
Third door opens: Pressure becomes 1/9 ATM
Fourth door opens: Pressure becomes 1/27 ATM
Fifth door opens: Pressure becomes 1/81 ATM
Final door opens: Loss of approximately 1 percent of atmosphere of the same volume as the launched vessel into space.

The faster you run the tube, the more you loose to space. Go slower and loose less.

I've been debating whether to be picky, and I'm going to be. Sorry.

Does the ship name above read ERSS DeVinci? If it's NRSS then you need the H Cyrilic, not the backwards N. Also, I've noticed that you're using Rhodina, not Rodina. Is this intentional?

No, your not. Don't apologize insincerely, its highly hypocritiocal and not to your credit.

yes, its called a lack of a cyrillic font, if you desire to be picky, provide me a cyrillic font and I shall use one. Being a russian speaker I am well aware of the inadequacies of the letterset at hand, but frankly didn't really see it as an issue on a atmosphere piece.

I tried to find several I could load, but none seen compatible to my machine, for reasons unknown.

Bryan,

My apologies if you have been asked this before, but could you briefly describe how you go about conceiving of, drawing and colouring your ships? They are beautiful.

Thanks

Ravs

Is Novaya Rodina supposed to be Russian?

If so, the proper would be (in cyrillic) «&#1053&#1086&#1074&#1080&#1081 &#1056&#1086&#1076&#1080&#1085&#1072&#1089&#1082&#1072&#1103 &#1050&#1086&#1089&#1084&#1086&#1095&#1077&#1089&#1082&#1086&#1075&#1086 &#1050&#1086&#1088&#1072&#1073&#1083&#1103» (Novii Rodinaskaya Kosmochestovo Korablya) abbreviated «&#1053&#1056&#1050&#1050» (NRKK)... New Radina's Space Ship...

Starship translates poorly... Korabl' Zvezdy «&#1082&#1086&#1088&#1072&#1073&#1083&#1100&#32&#1079&#1074&#1077&#1079&#1076&#1099» with results in «&#1053&#1056&#1050&#1047» with results in «&#1053&#1056&#1050&#1047»...

Edit: It ate the Russian... Grr... HTML Entities used this try...
Just in case your browser doesn't do Cyrillic:
Spaceship/ NRKK should look like "HPKK" (What looks like a backwards N is "ee", the russian N looks like H)

Starship/NRKZ should look like "HPK3"...

Rav: That would be a subject of some length, but I'll answer that diectly for you momentarily. And thanks for the compliments

Aramis : Yes, as a russian speaker I do know this, but as you have MUCH more politely pointed out than the last guy, its not correct. My russian ( Ukranian/beloruss, courtesy of my Granda) is VERY old ( havnt used it in years in any real way and is rusty as an old gate) but i still recognize there is NO correct spelling of a phonetic alphabet in english characters.

The fact is, I have no font that does more than approximate Cyrillic, for some reason I cant find one that works much less one that actually looks good at all.I've long since located several, but all like XP and hate my 2k Pro, for some reason.

Any ideas? Sources? I wouldn't mind getting a font, but its very low on my list of concerns.

Because, frankly? its a subject I could give a shit less about. I am not getting paid a damn dime for these babies and am doing it for my own enjoyment, and if it seems I am not overly concerned - well, if its bugs people so much the instant someone cuts me a check I'll worry about it. : )

Bryan:

I use a mac, so it's really quite easy for me to use Cyrillic: I just set the system to install Russian Language support. That being said, run a quick search on KOI-8 for your os... and you should find something supporting it. If you saw the characters in russian in my post, you at least have unicode support.

Or check your installs; your version of windows might support multi-language. I'm not certain; I don't use MS Win past 98se...

Another good spot to check is Omniglot.com Cyrillic Page (link)

According to http://aatseel.org/fonts/wincyrillic.html:
If you use Windows 95 and above, you do NOT need to obtain fonts or keyboard drivers for Cyrillic. Microsoft includes Cyrillic support in the system software. For the newest versions of Windows, do the following:
Go to "Control Panel" and double-click on "Regional Options". Choose the tab entitled "General". Towards the bottom are the language settings. Check "Cyrillic" and choose "ok."
And Bryan, I'm not B*%ching without offering assistance in correcting it.... I assumed that you'd a decent cyrillic font (the one you used appears pre-1800, which means it supports the full Cyrillic not just the modern 33-39 of Russian/Ukranian).

It's just one of those things that leapt out at me as "Ee-Ehr-Ess-Ess?? IRS Ship? WTF?"

nope nope, indeed you are not bitching, and you most certainly are offering help - making it constructive! That comment was not directed at you (sorry if it appeared so) but was intended generally. I've gotten emails and PMs on this, for chrissake, some polite, most much more on the order of poeple being condescending or being smugly authoritative.I have a very thick skin, the most annoying spect of these types of comments are more that they waste my time or just dont serve any purpose.

Its the offer to help or pointing to a resource that makes the difference.

What I have been using is some freeware true type fonts, but they are designed to give a "feel" of russian, and arent cyrillic at all. What Im after is a true cyrillic font that doesnt actuallt look like bookprint - more like block or eurostar font is what Im looking for.

Any suggestions are always welcomed!
