skills 'n' that in mgt: connects, packages, etc

Yeah, some rule mechanics seem a little too roll heavy... :D

REF: You see a door.
Player A: <roll> I ignore it.
Player B: <roll> I try to open it.
REF: Give me a Mechanics(Doorknob) check...
Player B: Got that - level-3... <roll> darn!
REF: You spend <roll> two minutes pulling on the knob to no avail.
Player B: <roll> I try again. <roll> crap!
REF: You push on the knob for <roll> three minutes to no avail.
Player B: <roll> I give up.
REF: Okay. <roll> Three minutes later <roll> the knob turns, the unlocked door opens <roll> inward, and <roll> a stranger walks through...

Should I be the referee, this could well be the result of a misshap while trying to open the door, should the task be safe: a somwhat embarrassing situation with no true ill consequences, except for the character pride.

I sure hope it doesn't take 12 rolls in your games to open an unlocked door! :D

Though, in character, it can be fun to play with TL assumptions - considering that a given PC may not actually know to turn a door knob...

No, usually it takes no rolls, but if it takes one and he rolls a misshap, while being a safe action (no security breaking or so), what you told could be a good result.

And yes, TL may be a good mess in either direction. I wouldn't know how to use a high TL computer, but neither a too low one (e.g. one that works with punched cards).

Hehe. I once had some players try all manner of 'techniques' to gain entry (mostly destructive in nature, of course) through a heavy duty, very securely locked, door.

Only to have an NPC just open the door from the inside - having heard the PC's inadvertent 'knocking' ... :D

The "inward" roll was a bit unneccessary... unless the door might have been locked (because the PCs had been trying to pull it outward and that didn't work, so the door must be inward-opening).

On the contrary I can see requiring a third roll as the player tried pulling the door sideways to slide it into the wall the way "normal" doors work on ships

What? No accounting for doors that fold down or up?

(In one of the Firefly TV series episodes, I seem to recall a character 'attaching' a doorknob to unlock a door -plenty of RP fodder there...).

Maybe it's a rotating door! :)
