Scout ships.

What is the largets ship the IISS operates? They're supposed to operate in conjuction with and as a supplement to the Imperial navies, but oher than survey ships, X-boats and scouts I've never come across anything that says they operate cruisers, or patrol ships, or some kind of corvette.

Can someone point me somewhere, or is this a GM perogative?

Supplement 9 mentions "the Scout Service controls a wide variety of craft up to cruiser class" but gives no specifics. Cruiser class is defined as 20Kton to 100Kton, below that is Escort class defined as up to 5Kton. So I guess that's the range you're looking at, for CT.

There is one glaring exception to this rule in the very same book though. S9 mentions in the description of the AHL Cruiser (60Ktons) that several were transferred to various organizations when decommissioned, including the IISS.

So we have known CT IISS ships of 100ton Scout, 100ton XBoat, 400ton Survey, 1000ton XBoat Tender, and 60Kton Cruiser.

Also, there was a "Scout Cruiser" done by FASA which used the CT stats for the Merc Cruiser but desinged for scout operations instead. I think it is in Advernture Class Ships II.

the last is assigned to Dispatch ( x-boat? )
the rest to Exploration and dispatched to worlds spinward of Imperium and rimward of Zhodani to explore,map and win allies against the Zhodani.

all 5 are pre-modernization, thus the spinal mount is a PA and not meson gun

The 2nd 1248 starship book has the 1000ton Machii class scout cruiser which is similar to the older Quasar class.

And the 400dton Telemon Survey Scout, basically a Donosev replacement.

My personal favorite for a small to medium sized party. (But of course I refuse to run Merchant Campaigns, so the limit of around 20 tons of cargo appeals to me.
