Question about minor races

[Vargr]

For what it's worth, I would like to see less on Minor Races (human or otherwise) and more on Human Cultures.

Vilani aside (and even they must have some permutations) I am sure Solomani-descended members of Humaniti must be so varied they might well be though of as different Minor Races in their attitudes.

And that's not mentioning that little thing called the Long Night. Individual planets isolated for over a millennium must have originated some pretty colorful cultures.

"The Soft Weapon" is a science fiction short story written in 1967 by Larry Niven, set in his Known Space universe. It was the basis of the Star Trek: The Animated Series episode, "The Slaver Weapon". The original idea for the episode later became Niven's novelette "The Borderland of Sol".

The story introduces the character of Nessus, who later became one of the main characters of the novel Ringworld. The story is retold, from the point of view of Nessus, in Juggler of Worlds...

There's more to the article, and it is very informative. I'd wager that the concept is easily adaptable to most Traveller universes, since if a story can be adapted to Star Trek, it can be adapted to practically anything.

Oh, there are more than five even if you ignore the six that BtC added. The three in Aramis subsector, the natives of Craw, the Larianz of Byret, the Shriekers , the unnamed natives of Tionale, and the unnamed[*] natives of 457-973. And that doesn't actually preclude more cropping up, since there has been no canonical statement that these are the only ones.

Actually I don't have Behind the Claw or Rim of Fire, or any Gurps products (other than Sword World/Interstellar Wars), No T4 (except Jtas 1?), No Mongoose, etc...
So I'll need to add the four listed here. (I've got Shriekers and the three in Aramis subsector)

I'd forgotten about uplifted races. They would be included in the 439 figure but are not part of the minor races counts.

The + after a name denotes unofficial/semi-official race.

Or as they're also known, non-canonical races. As I understand it, third-party publications that are not in print today are not, strictly speaking, canonical, but like you I consider anything by the Keith Bros. to be good enough for me.

Look at BtC for example. It not only added several marginal Minor Races in the 429 total, races that were "described" in those single sentence you mention, it also used up two of the much more limited number of Human Minor Races again "describing" them with a sentence or two.

I've tried to come up with stories that more or less reconcile the Tondouli and the Traltar with the canonical statement in AM8 that makes the Darrians the only minor human race in the Spinward Marches. Basically, they both claim to be minor human races, but they're not.

That leaves 269 races outside of Federation space. I will assume, (dangerous I know), that the K'kree have eradicated some of the G'naak races in their area of charted space. (A safe assumption, wouldn't you agree). So that will reduce the total some.

One question, What are some of the references, I guess AR1, AR2 etc is Gurps Alien Races, But what are GD, SRL,and SMC?

170 minor races sounds like a lot for a region half the size of the Imperium. What's the wording of the reference? Could it be interpreted to include minor humans, variants, and uplifts?

Pretty safe assumption. But presumably that has already been taken into account for the 400 figure.

Hopefully Hans is right and I wont find any more, but of course I found several I wasn't aware of this time around, so who knows what I'll find as I dig deeper.

As I said after Bill's post, I'm not adding any races, just cataloguing races and source info as printed.

The 170 race reference is from Aliens of the Rim page 16, section heading MINOR RACES
"...There are over 170 member races within the Hive Federation, which are diverse physiologically...."
Now I suppose you could say that there are more than 170 races in Hiver space but only 170 are members of the Federation. But I won't add fuel to that fire, suffice it to say that I (that is My personal) interpret this to mean there are 170 different races, whether indig, uplifted, human minor or what I don't know, just that there are 170 member races.

As far as taking extinct or exterminated races as part of the list, I include them. It actually would make it easier if there were 439 known races of which 300 no longer exist. But I have no canon source either way as to whether the 439 number includes extinct species or not.

(please note that if there are 170 member species in the federation and we have reference for four {Gurvin, Ithklur, Za'tachk, Prt'} then that leaves 269 for the rest of canon space, and member races would denote living not extinct)

Also, does the 439 figure include Human Minor Races? If so that leaves us around 220 races, of which I've listed 114 outside Hiver space.

Tezcat AR4 pg116-123 Reft 1907

The Tezcat are a good example of the schizoid nature of the Minor Races covered in the various GT publications. Some of those races, like the J'aadje, are good follow-ups to previously mentioned Minor Races. The J'aadje were presented in CT's Night of Conquest[/i] and GT's AR4 examined them in greater detail. Some previously mentioned Minor Races, like the Addaxur from CT's Zhodani Alien Module, were changed for GT. Some, like the Tezcats and Valkrie, are crap and were literally borrowed from other sci-fi RPGs in order to pad out the text.

The two latter categories are why GT's Minor Races are going to be looked at rather closely by TPTB.

Also, does the 439 figure include Human Minor Races?

I'd say no, because the Imperium uses two different labels: Minor Race and Human Minor Race.

I'm amazed how quickly it all came together. What's it been four days.

The Addaxur homeworld is not listed in Zho Alien Module it only says sixty parsec from Zhdant. I don't know about Gurps

As far as "self published" races go, I know of some that recieved mention in canon sources, but were never mentioned as canon, an example being the S'mirii from Dagudashaag/Signal GK fanzine. I saw a passing refernce somewhere, which reminds me Signal GK-5 is now available for download which is the S'mirri issue, check it out and tell me what you think.

Now, about the S'raak, Somewhere I read an article about the S'raak war, and the S'raak race, I think it may have been in an HIWG New Zealand document, but the actual reference escapes me. I'm still missing stuff from our move five years ago notably the Hinterworlds info, H'hkar from Challenge 52, Maybe challenge 49?, World Builders Handbook, and who knows what else. I figure since we haven't opened those boxes in the garage in five years I should clean it out but my wife disagree's , If I search awhile maybe I'll find more aliens. Or at least my missing stuff.

I went ahead and grabbed a copy of Alien_list3 for comparision, And found a few aliens I hadn't listed, which brings me back to a previous statement of mine:

Well, I dug deeper, looking for the Vargr minor races listed in AL3, then I noticed this on page 79 of Vilani and Vargr
".. An insignificant race calling themselves the Upir Cusuri had once lived here before their eradication..."

So now I add Upir Cusuri to my list, plus AL3 which brings the total to 127 listed minor races, not including the 6 from AL3 from the Paranoia Press Vanguard/Beyond books and the Judges Guild material, which have been superceded by newer material on the Gateway domain.

I'll dig deeper, who knows what I'll find.

Wow, have I been busy. I've managed to up the list to 132 alien races, plus 5 races from paranoi press/judges guild which have been superceded by new material.

I found a large batch of HIWG documents and Hinterworlds, squirreled away (which I've been looking for forever) right next to my computer desk, And I went out and dug thru those boxes in the garage!

While checking out the list to confirm the source info for some races I came across the Hasst'kor, who geneered the Prt', And the Kebkh from Megatraveller Folio Adv 2. So I guess there are still some races left to be found in canon literature. So Here is the updated list:

I would guess that the races listed by Tiffany Star, which was the original source idea for this list, Included Mr Videll's aliens for the failed Zarushagar source book, Some of the races, Like the Tentrassi recieved mention in Megatraveller Journal, which would make them "canon" source aliens. Other's like the S'raak, came from the HIWG group working out Yiklerzandz (probably misspelled) sector, which were mentioned inTTC. Again I would include these as extended canon. As to playtesting, most races on this list are just names (or unnamed) races without any source info at all.

Here's a question: The Hinterworld folio say's there are Eight alien minor races in the sector, of which I have infromation on five, any Idea's as to the other three? I still can't find Challenge 39 in this mess.

Also I'm still missing the H'hkar info and the Julian Protectorate from Challenge 52, any help would be appreciated.

Finally, I'm having second thoughts on the 439 alien races, I may be inclined to say these are Imperial space only races and not include Non Imperial races. I'll have to ponder this for a while.
