Project Mars

A.D. 2030
Never before had men felt real confidence that peace was permanent.
The fear that a diplomatic cold war might metamorphose into a hot fight, with death and destruction to soldiers and civilians alike, was gone.

The final catastrophic conflict was over. The great Russian Empire, after five of the most frightful years in the history of the world, had finally succumbed to the last despairing blows of the almost exhausted Western Powers. The great Asiatic mass had become a group of smaller states, slowly digging out from under the ruins of the war. But they, too, were represented in the Congress of the World, which was in session in the great domed building overlooking Long Island Sound from the hills above Greenwich, Connecticut. They too voted Aye or Nay on the laws which were to assure the welfare and safety of all the peoples of Earth. At last the ancient prejudices and selfish insistences upon national sovereignty were no more. A brief ten years had seen the flames of war engulf anew the hopes for peace of uncounted millions, but now no votes could frusterate the decisions of the freely selected Representatives of all the People of the Earth. The President and his Cabinet faithfully carried out whatever was enacted into law by the Congress of the United States of Earth.

And each man knew in his heart that the Government of the United States of Earth no longer lacked the military power to enforce those laws. Fatal indeed had this lack been to the United Nations.

The Transatmospheric Rapid Deployment Forces (TRDF) of the United States of Earth could handle any minor trouble which might boil up in any latitude or longitude. Almost within minutes from the outbreak, TRDF would be on the spot to awe into civilized obedience the unruly burghers of the most remote village or hamlet. Trained to a tick and composed of elements drawn from every land and clime, they had at one time been the best soldiers in the world. In the event of more serious and organized trouble, the United States of Earth could reduce to rubble any community which refused to obey the verdict of the Congress. Enormous submarine cruisers could fire long range rockets thousands of miles inland if the appearance overhead of hundreds of destruction-laden bombers should have failed in its effect.

And above it all, invisible yet omnipresent Lunetta, the man-made Moon, circled silently far above the atmosphere.

Lunetta's acid test had taken place in the final World War. During the dread winter of 2024-25, the motorized forces of the Western allies had ground to a solid stop in the vastness of the Asian steppes. The chilling cold had numbed the blood and the courage of the most intrepid soldiers. Air attacks on the industrial centers of Siberia had almost eased by reason of the incredible accuracy and effectiveness of the adverse anti-aircraft rockets. But these rockets could not reach Lunetta in her dizzying heights, and the courageous crew of 440 men and women who manned her directed their anti-missile interceptors at the enemy's ICBMs and Warheads to such good effect that the scales of victory could only incline towards the Allies.

And so Lunetta had become the Goddess of a new, strong peace, which was to deliver mankind from the morass of the foregoing century. But she was also the symbol of the final victory of man over space. She it was who was to point out the paths of the universe to the peoples of the Earth.

History recorded the dawn of 2030.

The preamble of - Project Mars A Technical Tale - by Dr. Wernher von Braun with some updates for plausibility by Space Cadet

I thought that this is an interesting RPG setting to explore. Now what if Project Mars was updated for the 21st century?

Were talking about an Earth fleet of 10 interplanetary vessels and 10 landers delivering 70 people to Mars. We'll need something to substitute for the canals, perhaps an alien artifact was discovered buried underground by a remote probe. Perhaps they just want to colonize the planet etc. I think 2030 AD is an appropriate time period setting to describe some of the capabilities in von Braun's book.

Can you clarify this for us? Are there canals on the Mars in von Braun's book?

And customarily, when quoting a work, one does not insert one's own changes into it. It would be best if you rewrote it in your own words if you want to update anything in the scenario.

von Braun's Mars has canals and an ancient civilization that maintains them.

C. Physical Data for Mars Voyage
Average distance from Sun: 2.28 * 10^11 m
Distance from Sun at perihelion: 2.06 * 10^11 m
Distance from Sun at aphelion: 2.49 * 10^11 m
Period of revolution: 687 days or 5.94 * 10^7 sec
Mean Orbital velocity: 24.1 * 10^3 m/sec
Radius of planet: 2,110 mi or 3.390 * 10^6 m
Parabolic escape velocity at surface: 5.04 *10^3 m/sec
Circular orbit velocity at surface: 3.56 * 10^3 m/sec
Radius of mothership satellite orbit: 4.39 * 10^6 m
Circular velocity of this satellite orbit: 3.14 * 10^3 m/sec
Period of revolution of satellite orbit: 2 h 26 min 24 sec or 8.78 * 10^3 sec
Gravitational acceleration at surface: 0.38 g or 3.73 m/sec^2
Solar constant: 568 W/m^2
Planet's albedo: 27 percent
Albedo of planet's atmosphere: 17 percent
Atmospheric pressure at surface: 84 g/cm^2 or 0.084 bar
Atmospheric density at surface: 1.1 * 10^-4 g/cm
Boiling point of water at surface: 111 F or 44 C
Mean yearly temperature: 48 F or 9 C
Altitude increment, at which atmosphere pressure decreases by a factor of 10: (Earth 11.2 mi or 18 * 10^3 m) Mars: 29.3 miles or 47.15 * 10^3 m

The main difference is that the atmosphere of von Braun's Mars is thicker, the boiling point of water is 44 C rather than close to 0 C as we now know the figure to be. There are canals, but they are underground canals which feed the local aquifier, the straight lines that Percival Lowell saw were lines of vegitation drawing their mosture from the underground aquifier supplied by the canals. Water can exist on the surface, but it tends to evaporate quickly, there is not much water on Mars.

I basically made Lunetta into an orbital ABM platform, perhaps with some offensive nuclear missile capability as well, and point defense guns. I added 50 years to each of the dates mentioned in the book, and changed the Soviet Eastern Block into the Russian Empire with its satellites.

The conflict between Russia and NATO was nonideological, mostly about a sucessor to Putin's Russia wanting to recapture the glory days of the Russian Empire of old, unfortunately various parts of the old Russian Empire are NATO member states and whoever was running Russia thought he could just send the troops into the NATO area and recapture Eastern Europe without a fight, or at least without much assistance from the western powers. The Ukraine and Poland put up a heck of a fight. The war started out conventional and remained so for most of its duration. A terrorist attack by a third country supplied by a Russia seeking to stir up trouble triggered a nuclear exchange. The ABM system developed by the United States was by this time quite advanced and it included such things as laser satellites and kinetic kill vehicles and utilized a multi-layered approach to destroying incomming ICBMs. Lunetta is an orbital space station which orbits perpendicular to the Solar System's ecliptic, it is accompanied by rings of ABM satellites which are maintained by the Station's crew. The station is 200 feet in diameter and rotates once every 20 seconds providing 0.3 g of simulated gravity at its outer rim. The Russians had space assets as well, and the space war between them proved decisive with the Russian assets destroyed and with the US and NATO ABMs knocking out most of the ICBMs that were launched When it became clear that the West would survive a nuclear attack, the Russian government surrendered or were overthrown by other Russians. Much devastation resulted from the limited nuclear exchange. New York City was devastated as was Washington DC, and several other cities around the world were wiped off the map. As the UN was seen to have been a failure in stopping this war, a much stronger government was proposed, modeled after the United States, the victor in this contest, it was called the United States of Earth, it basically follows the US constitution with regard to government structure and the admendment process, but with Nations replacing states. Each Nation gets 2 senators, and a number of congress people equal to the number of congressional districts per Nation state, proportion.

I don't know, nothing is really finallized, that's why I brought this up for discussion. Another alternative is to set this in the 1980s as an alternate history, in that assumption the hydrogen bomb was never developed, there was an atomic war between the West and the Soviet Block, and somehow the US and its allies managed to get this space Station up there delivered in 10 sections, along with two other satellites, the Control Room and the Bomb bay, and they basically dropped atomic bombs from a high inclination orbit. The technology is more understandable if you do it that way. The space station uses a solar steam turbine to generate power as no one in von Braun's day, (1949)he had assumed efficient photoelectric cells were not practical, those things were still very much in the future at the time he wrote this book.

von Braun's world was very much one of the slide rule, electronic computers were assumed to be massive things which required vacuum tubes. Radio communication was still very crude, requiring vaccum tubes also, a particular problem was in focusing radio beams. von Braun considered 3 kinds of radios, short range, medium, and interplanetary, he was aware of television of course, but the types of communication he envisioned was voice between the ships and astronauts, and interplanetary communication was by wireless telegraph due to the low signal-noise ratio of the weak signal as it travelled millions of miles between Mars and Earth. If they took photographs while on the surface of Mars, it was by film photography, the film would then have to be developed while on ship, and the public would have to wait until the expedition returned before they got to see the pictures of Mars' surface. Television signals beamed across interplanetary distances were not deemed practical.

The nature of the mission was thus, there were 10 interplanetary ships, three of them would release 3 glider landers, that would land on skis on the planet's ice caps, these would not take off again, instead some heavy duty catapillars would be offloaded and a team would make the trek from the ice cap to the equator and scout out a suitable landing field for the other 7 landers with wheels to land, or else thay would construct a landing field by smooting out the surface with bulldozers. The atmosphere is 10 times thicker than real Mars, but still pressure suits must be worn.

Shouldn't this be in Random Static?

I can't see how it relates to 2300AD in any way. It has no Stutterwarp, no Aliens, no International conflict. It totally lacks even a remote claim to "alternate universe"

An Alternate Universe such as that was entirely possible, it was set in the 1980s, its entirely possible that von Braun's Sirius Boosters could have been built at the time, they were three-stage entirely reusable heavy lift rockets designed to ferry people and cargo to a 1,000 km high orbit from a launch site in Hawaii. Most of the technologies described by von Braun in his book were 1949 technologies, that would coincide with Tech Level 6 as far as Traveller terminology was concerned, he described his ships and vehicles so completely that you can probably make Traveller Stats for his Tech Level 6 space ships.

The highest tech in his books was the reusablility of his Sirius Class heavy lift launch vehicles, they were 200 feet tall and had three stages, the first two stages returned to Earth and landed in the oceans using parachutes, the third stages were much like our space shuttle in concept, they had wings and they landed on runways as heavy gliders. The first two stages were retrieved from the ocean by cargo ships and refurbished and used again for the next launch. Typically launches occured every 12 hours, and 950 launches were required of the Sirius Rockets to entirely outfit the Mar Project Expedition. The technologies used in the spaceships were vintage 1949 for the most part, they included vacuum tube radios, and in some cases wireless telegraphy had to be resorted to because the signal to noise ration at interplanetary distances and teh weak signal generated precluded voice communications. Power was generated by a solar mirror concentrating sunlight onto the boilers of a steam generator or in the case of the Mars bound ship Mercury was used as the working fluid to achieve greater efficiency.

Also this takes place after World War III, much as Twilight 2000 and 2300, so it is a "post appocalyptic" setting.

If you want to play with the Von Braun Mars Mission, the Image comic book series Ministry Of Space is set in a alternative universe, where the United Kingdom lands on Mars in 1969, & is the dominant power in Space....
However, this dominance comes at the price of "freezing" the U.K in a permanant 1953, with regards to social conditions, & the "start up" capital is later to be found as coming directly or indirectly from Holocaust victims....
The story is told by the first man in space, John Dashwood, in intercuts between the 1940's onwards & 2001, who is summoned to Churchill Space Station to answer certain questions on the Ministry's founding.
The reason being, the U.S now wants to get into space, using modified Apollo era Technology (The CSM in Ministry of Space uses a cluster of 60 ion drives, as it's main engine) & in order to do so, are threatening to reveal where exactly the money came from.....
I can't resist posting these pieces of dialogue from Ministry of Space....
"I claim this terrority for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, & for The British Empire. This is not the the end of our Mission, it's the Beginning.....".
- Victoria 1 Lunar Landing 1956

"For Queen And Country & the Royal Space Force, Mars is ours... Move Out". - Mars Exploratory Force, 1969
