Prison in Character Generation

recoop

SOC-3
Merry Christmas and compliments of the season to all and sundry.

I notice that when generating character's and a mishap occurs, all the roll possibilities include a tour of the local prison.

Has anyone done any work to resolve what might happen during that 4 year term? The character could then continue, but in another profession/class.

I know that such a system has been done for classic, megatraveller and/or TNE over on Freelance Traveller site and I was curious to see if anyone has done anything for T20.

One of the older Dragon magazines had 'detailed resolution' (a la 1 year terms of the Mercenary/High Gaurd/Scouts/Merchant Prince fame) for Rogues and i think they actually had Prison as a result of some situations and tables for survival/skills/etc.

I await with trembling fingers for the players guide. Anyone have any idea when that may be?
I could possibly see using the Rogue as an alternate, but not Mercenary or Academic. After said prison stay, one may become a Mercenary due to bad taste remaining or wrongful imprisonment, but I don't really think Academic would fit the bill except if the character was well mannered in prison and took to studying in his 'spare' time. But I guess anything is possible.

IRL, many prisoners do spend time in prison studying, taking accredited course work, receiving degrees, etc. Especially if it's degree work connected with the legal field -- they write appeals for themselves and each other, and can work as a paralegal when they get out. That's what my stepfather did.

I suppose it depends on the prison. In a prison with a library I would allow a book worm type experience, courses by correspondence and even degrees/higher qualifications. Since there is a high correlation between employment and crime, and a strong correlation between education and employment I can see prison systems encouraging this path.

The mercenary class is described as anything from a thug upwards. This indicates that a standover man (ala' Chopper Reid) would very much be the mercenary class. In absolute control systems this wouldn't be appropriate, but in anything looser it certainly should be given a thought.
