Plotting Jumps

This question occurred to me while reading through the thread on Dyson Spheres and the 100-Diameter limit; I thought it was distinct enough to merit its own thread.
Jumpspace correlates to realspace, and a plotted hyperspace jump path must correlate with an empty path in realspace. The IISS tries to track the more massive bodies in most inhabited star systems, and the updated data they send out is part of the Jump calculation.
So far so good.
The question is: does the plotted jump have to be a straight line?
Jump masking implies that it might- otherwise you could just plot a big curve around a planet, or indeed a star; however, it is equally possible that, while curves are possible, there are limits to the angles achievable, or to the distance from the mean path that can be made without distorting the jump field.
Any thoughts?

I don't require it IMTU as it isn't written in the rules. If could be interesting as given the limited # of jump targets from a particular system, you might be able to infer someones intended destination from the "jump out" location they choose...
 
I thought according to Einstein that all space-time is curved, therefore any Jump plot should be curved as well. Or am I misunderstanding that?

His theory covers our space/time. Jump space is not our space/time.

Theories are put forward to explain observed phenomenon in our universe. Since no one has observed anything in "jump space" there are no theories yet developed....
 
I think one of the causes of misjump is entering within 100 diameters of a celestial body ... I always imagined that the jump was a "straight line" and was Navigator skill "dodge" stars and other objects, and then return to "normal space" as close as possible to the 100 diameters of the objective. (Although given that space is "almost empty" no such thing must be common).
 
The assertion that Jumpspace correlates to real space isn't necessarily true (though from what MM has said in the past it seems he thinks so in his TU). Real space and jump space are seperate entities that may not correlate in any meaningful way in terms of a path or trajectory.

If you take a train from Florence to Naples, you will inevitably pass through Rome, but if you take a plane, you never pass through Rome because you use the third dimension.

Even this analogy may be too simplistic, since the plane passes 'over' Rome. With jump space you may travel between two places without having any correlation whatsoever to the real space locations between them.

How are you going to make starship captain if you keep thinking three-dimensionally? ;)
