Player Seeking Group/Referee: Philadelphia

TomeGnome

SOC-9
Hey there;

I'm looking for a Referee who is interested in running a Classic Traveller game in the suburbs of Philadelphia (West Chester/Kennet to be precise). I am a member of several role-playing groups, but they are all spoiled by the "Player-Directed" phenomenon: no randomness allowed. If I suggested a game where you can die in CharGen, well... :nonono:

Let me know! Willing to play one-on-one, but may be able to get like-minded individuals involved!

The "Player-Directed Phenomenon" (a term I more or less just made up for this post) is how most modern RPG players feel cheated or as if the game is not worth playing unless they can consciously choose each and every aspect of their character. Recent additions to games like D&D, like attributes by point-buy, have essentially removed randomness from the equation all together.

There's nothing wrong with that kind of system (I love GURPS, for instance), but the phenomenon I'm seeing is that players think that that kind of choice is required for a game to be acceptable. Myself, I like the idea that we are as much in control of our character's nature as we are in our own (i.e. moderately to not-at-all), and think that this fear of randomness removes a lot of fun opportunities for expansive play.

Rant over. :) I also enjoy various candies!

Maybe "Deterministic Player-Character Generation" (as opposed to the random sort) might serve to better describe the concept, but only if you're into big words.
