pictures for races?

This is related to the T5 grand survey thread of sophonts of the Imperium. I noticed that there are no pictures of the races in their wiki entries, but there are maps of their homeworlds from Travellermap.

Is it because it's a lot of work to post pictures, eats up too much space, or are there copyright issues?

Thanks for any reply.

My guess is that there are IP issues; some of the rights may be murky, or even explicitly unavailable. I do know that several sophonts and human minor races have gotten at least "line portraits" in some of the classic materials.

I noticed the same thing when I decided to volunteer at the Wiki.

I do not speak officially for the Wiki so I can only speak as an individual. Others would have to speak in an official capacity.

I would guess that few pictures have been uploaded for the following reasons:
* Many of the races do not have artwork.
* There are only a handful of volunteers working to make the Wiki better.
* Much of the existing artwork, does not have permission to be shared on the wiki.
* Where permission is not explicitly given, the default is to not take any action.

Thanks for any reply.

Very welcome.

Having said that, I have been slowly documenting the sophonts of Traveller, creating artwork for them (I am an illustrator), and determining the canonicity of each race.

Don made a very cool master sophont document not too long ago. RIP.

Shalom,
Maksim-Smelchak.

Almost all of the canonical races in CT, MT, T4, and TNE rules have at least one illustration; the question in the past was rights to use the artwork.

Marc's standard copyright rules
-----------------------------------

I have some info about copyright on my site. Go to:
==> Tavonni Repair Bays
==> Licencing and Other Pastimes

...and there's a bunch of stuff there. Especially read the last article entitled "FarFuture FAQ: Net Policy on Use of Role Playing Titles - 22 Jun 1998". This has more info about pictures (summary: if Marc owns it, you can use it as long as you put a copyright notice on each picture, plus include his site-wide disclaimer somewhere on your site).

Extended copyright
---------------------

You can take a read of my LibDate Copyrights page for an example. Go to my Library Data site and, at the foot of the "Introduction to Traveller Library Data" window, click on the Copyright link.

Alternatively, here's the direct link, without the LibData context:
http://members.tip.net.au/~davidjw/libdata/indexes/copy_ack.htm

For my site, Marc kindly gave me an extension on the normal rules (since the LibData is basically a reprint of the books!!!) So you may be able to ask Marc about something similar, specifically for the TravWiki site.

Hope that helps. (And in case I forgot to do it, thanks to our own Jim Vassilikos for his extensive copyright research back in the early 90's, when fans were battling TSR!!!)

David - [m;]the current rules are not the 1998.[/m;]

Your site is grandfathered with the "handshake license" from Marc... but all new sites, and the Wiki and COTI BBS, must follow the 2008, as should extant sites. And you should NEVER point to an out of date version!

[m;]The current and correct version is: http://www.farfuture.net/FFEFairUsePolicy2008.pdf[/m;]

It's a little different from the 1998.

Ouch! Why didn't you say so earlier? ;-)

OK, the new one is almost the same, but it's been expanded a little. I'll have to add it in as the definitive, last link.

And update my notice to 2008. ;-)

And I still suggest that whoever's running the wiki should put it to Marc as a FAQ Point 6 "Special Case".

As far as I know, Thomas Jones-Low is the guy in charge of the Wiki.

In it's original form, as hosted on Wikia, the wiki didn't have much access to artwork, or the copyright for existing artwork was a little confused. So the original authors tended to be shy about adding such pictures.

After the wiki was moved here, and we could use more artwork (because it is owned by FFE), the limitation is mostly having people (like myself or Maksim-Smelchak) find good pictures and post them. It isn't difficult, but is simply another task which requires time and attention.

Hi Blue Ghost,

I have the task of uploading of more FFE and copyright-permitted images on my long list of things to do.

If you would like to volunteer to help the wiki or have images that you would like to share, please contact me or Thomas Jones-Low.

Thank you!

Shalom,
Maksim-Smelchak.

Even though I've been posting on this site an awful lot over the last four years or so, I've actually got my hands full right now with real world and Traveller related stuff.

I look forward to seeing your sketches though.
