Number of decks calculation

Prodded by the "Working on a flattened Sphere trader" thread, I've pulled out my code for calculating the number of decks a ship should have. This is from my Space Opera starship design app.

// Number of decks from 100 to 1000000 tons

Var decks As Double

Select Case Ships(CurrentShip).Hull.Mass
Case Is < 500
decks = 1
Case Is < 1000
decks = 2
Case Is < 2500
decks = 3
Case Is < 10000
decks = 4
Case Is < 15000
decks = 5
Case Is < 37500
decks = 6
Case Is < 50000
decks = 7
Case Is < 62500
decks = 8
Case Is < 75000
decks = 9
Case Is < 137500
decks = 10
Case Is < 150000
decks = 11
Case Is < 350000
decks = 12
Case Is < 400000
decks = 13
Case Is < 550000
decks = 14
Case Is < 600000
decks = 15
Case Is < 875000
decks = 16
Case Is < 1000000
decks = 17
Else 'Case 1000000
decks = 18
End Select

// Configuration modifier
Select Case Configuration 'Cylinder is * 1
Case "Sphere"
decks = decks * 3.0
Case "Cube"
decks = decks * 2.6
Case "Flattened Sphere"
decks = decks * 1.5
Case "Slab"
decks = decks * 0.65
Case "Modular"
decks = decks * 0.85
End Select

decks = Round(decks)

Return decks

well, what if I just have a huge, 1 deck 10K ton ship. For reasons.

not sure you can really have a determination of the number of decks based on architecture and size - a tail sitter vs a belly lander, same size, same config, will have very different deck counts. Put a 747 as a tail lander. a lot of very small decks :)

edit: not that I am against trying as I do this all the time. but I feel each design class will be different. the only config I see that this would work for consistently is spheres. Every other configuation may vary orientations or have other factors that impact the deck count.

OP is Bookmarked. Thanks for sharing.

As many things Traveller, we are allowed to do many things our own way. I like the Number of Decks per Ship Size, but feel a little mushy as far as the Configuration Modifiers are concerned.

When I was doing the math for my Flattened Sphere, I considered the differences between a 200 dton 2 deck & 1 deck, and settled on a 1 deck. I felt that the 2 deck was too thick for the diameter, at least as far as I was concerned. Plus, it was a lot easier to make things fit in the 1 deck than the 2 deck. At one point, I was considering 2.5 & 3 deck designs, but they almost made me cry.

A lot of common Type S have technically three decks, although 1 main deck and 2 quarterdecks might be more accurate. I get the idea, but looks more like guideline/reality check than certain reproducible auto floor plan gen.

There seems to be some controversy, on that.

It is, remotely, possible, that there might have been one or more subclasses.
I'm commenting on Mongoose doing up their version of the plans as a through-deck design, while the original from the boxed game was a tailsitter (with repeating deck types, so it didn't take 80 sheets of 11x17 paper to do it in 1/2"=1.5m scale...)

I still have those plans, though the box and counters are mostly long gone.

:)

That would involve a complete redesign of the ship. Mongoose f****d up their plans. The ridiculous excuses soon followed.

They have since gone back to the original tower block plans.

Having just checked LBB S05 - Lightning Class Cruisers, the ships have 84 decks. Standard decks were 4.5m high, but the two hangar decks were each 18m high.
eta Which works out as 90 decks of 4.5m height.
