Now THAT makes a difference ...

A "heretic" is generally viewed as someone that refuses to accept or conform to orthodox dogma or canon.

Only by those who do not know the actual meaning of the word (which is probably the majority ...)

Properly used, "heretic" describes, specifically, one who having once accepted and embraced [Christian] orthodoxy subsequently renounces it. Therefore, if you have never been orthodox, you cannot be heretical, no matter how unorthodox you may be :)

Having studied church history, I am aware of the specific meaning of the term. However, I very much doubt that that was the meaning when used in the earlier post.

Exterminatus?

Burn the heretics!

Quoting Warhammer 40K mantra's there. Nuking from orbit is the least the Imperial Inquisition inflicts on perceived tainted worlds....

For God's sake. It is a commonly used quotation from Game workshop's Warhammer 40K and Warhammer franchise of RPG's and tabletop games.

Check the origin of the quote before having a sideways go at me.

I have a very low opinion of Warhammer 40K. I do not play it, have no interest in playing in, and would not recognize a quote from it. I am not exactly a fan of Warhammer either.

The irony is that the combination of prior Traveller license, Timing, similar modes of troop formations, and general levels of technology, WH40K is quite likely grown right from GW's ATU.

In all seriousness, the 40K universe quite likely started as their in-house Traveller ATU, as early materials for 40K are pretty close in tone to their later Traveller materials. Right down to wandering merchant capital-ships working for an Imperium of Mankind.

It's also a fun universe to play in... the accumulated differences have created an adventure-rife setting with most tropes used pushed to the comedic level. If you have a friend with a copy you can borrow, the core books for the FFG 40K RPGs (Dark Heresy, Rogue Trader, Deathwatch, Black Crusade, Only War) are fun reads for the extensive fluff text - but each also finds a niche that's fun to play.

Oh, and the "great big man-operated guns" of the ships are as good a reason as any for HG to have results of the type it does...

I have been gaming WH40K on and off since the early 90's.

Not my favourite game by any means and some of the stuff is very dark indeed. But the setting is very rich and very detailed.

Certainly agree to you about the manned lance batteries :)

Going back to the original idea of the thread, I can understand that players would like to have some fun fighting space battles with ships of their own design, rather than canned one, so that they can experiment and see what works best for them.

What I am interested in is whether or not there would be sufficient interest in a small size game to justify putting together a prototype for submission to Marc, possibly with a either clean up set or simpler set of TCS rules. I have basically all of the needed prototype materials already for use with my games design class.
