Music for Traveller

Hmm.

Well, since I'm a big fan, I'd be remiss not to mention the Lord Weird Slough Feg's concept album "Traveller" - which is inspired directly by Trav. It takes some liberties with the OTU (but who doesn't?) but is a solid heavy metal prog-rock album. Reminiscent of old Iron Maiden, et al.

But for the "floating around in space, exploring a star faring galaxy" I'd recommend the EvE Online soundtrack by Jon Hallur of CCP. Lots of ambient, synth harmonics. Very nicely done.

Have to check into that.

These guys have instrumental music heavily influenced by various movie genres, mostly fantasy, action, and scifi. I find the songs really good for both prep and play and they're available on iTunes.

To my boundless delight I just found out as of yesterday that Vangelis' Beaubourg has been remastered and released as of late Nov/early Dec of last year. Beaubourg is an exceedingly challenging work to listen through, as it is radically different from his more main-stream albums like China, Chariots of Fire, Mask, Opera Sauvage, or the Blade Runner OST. It is, in my mind, akin to the soundtracks of the dystopic SciFi movies of the late 60's and the 1970's, e.g. The Andromeda Strain, Logan's Run, etc. Thus, I wouldn't play Beaubourg during the gaming-sessions, as it demands all of one's attention, but as a very effective kind of ouverture to set the mood.

Twenty-five years ago I had it on used, scratchy vinyl with far too many distortions and pops, and I will be getting a chance to hear it in pristine condition on CD in a few days. Can't wait! :D

Having grown up with Vangelis in the 70s and 80, I go to his work for that quintessentially "otherworldly", ethereal sound, followed immediately by the marvelously engrossing and liberating compositions of Steve Roach.
