To my boundless delight I just found out as of yesterday that Vangelis'
Beaubourg has been remastered and released as of late Nov/early Dec of last year.
Beaubourg is an exceedingly challenging work to listen through, as it is radically different from his more main-stream albums like
China,
Chariots of Fire,
Mask,
Opera Sauvage, or the
Blade Runner OST. It is, in my mind, akin to the soundtracks of the dystopic SciFi movies of the late 60's and the 1970's, e.g.
The Andromeda Strain,
Logan's Run, etc. Thus, I wouldn't play
Beaubourg during the gaming-sessions, as it demands all of one's attention, but as a very effective kind of ouverture to set the mood.
Twenty-five years ago I had it on used, scratchy vinyl with far too many distortions and pops, and I will be getting a chance to hear it in pristine condition on CD in a few days. Can't wait!
Having grown up with Vangelis in the 70s and 80, I go to his work for that quintessentially "otherworldly", ethereal sound, followed immediately by the marvelously engrossing and liberating compositions of Steve Roach.
