more new Doctor Who?

Tom Baker used to be my favorite but (while I really liked Eccelstone) thanks to the Big Finish audio plays I've been converted to a Paul McGann fan.

You can get Big Finish products from here (lower left side lists all back stories, the Paul McGann stories should be heard in order). There are some really crackers, like the one with Daleks quoting Shakespere! Also highly recommended from the same source is Dalek Empire ... an epic story without the Doctor, but featuring David Tennant (as someone else) and Gareth Thomas (from Blakes 7).

Tom was my favourite and still is, really. David Tennant is looking like he's going to be a close second though.

Christopher Eccleston was a bit hit and miss for me. I had no problem with the costume and I will be eternally grateful for him bringing a very broad range and depth to the 9th Doctor's character but the whole 'northern lad' thing got a bit wearing in places and he was also a little too intense in others. I rewatched 'Parting of the Ways' with Elin yesterday and his horribly forced laughter at the end, before he regenerated was just cringeworthy.

David Tennant looks like he's playing the same character he played in 'Cassanova', and if that's the case then he's going to be a winner for me.

'No second chances. I'm that sort of a man.'

Whilst we're on the subject (and I'm taking every opportunity I can to shout about this) I had an absolutely amazing Christmas present from my Mother-in-law. Her friend's husband was one of the radio control team that operated the Dalek and after filming had ceased, he grabbed a handful of debris from the floor. When he learned that I was a rabid Dr WHO fan, he said I could have them. It's basically three spent rifle rounds and some green silicone rubber. Not very exciting in themselves but it sends me into orgasmic shockwaves just knowing that they came from a Dr WHO set. Ahhh... simple pleasures...

I see Anthony Stuart Head is coming up as a bad guy, which is a shame as I thought he would have made an excellent Doctor.

I personally think DT could go horribly in the direction of Sylvester McCoy and be a bit too comic, lets hope Russel Davis doesn't make him too much of a pastiche!

I hate to be the stick in the mud, but Christopher Eccleston's performances and intensity was made the series shine. It was when he did the hokey stuff like throw back the nanites or launch the TARDIS into an incoming Dalek missile that seemed very cliche. DT, it is still too early to tell, but I must say the Sword fight sequence reminded of the return of Pertwee style Doctor...

McCoy was better in the second season when the darkness was allowed to express itself. In the first season, I remember think, this ain't Doctor Who but neither was Trial of a Timelord...

Ahem, Tom Baker was the best doctor. I can't believe there is even any discussion about this.

He had just the right type of acting and the every man look to him to pull it off. He was the definitive Dr.

Not at all. Everyone has their favourite Doc and it's senseless to try and convince them otherwise, really.

I agree about Sylvester McCoy. Doctor WHO had slipped into pantomime farce by the mid-80's. Producer John Nathan Turner wanted out and had wanted out for a while. He didn't seem to care about the show any more and it felt as if no-one on the production team did either. I felt that it was just starting to claw it's way back out of it's dip with a darker Doctor and stories like Curse of Fenris and Ghostlight. Sadly, by then the damage had been done and the series was finally Exterminated. :(

With regards to the Big Finish Audios. McGann does get a very good turn, though some of the recent 'Alternate Universe' stories have been a bit too surreal for my liking. Something I do recommend though, are the Colin Baker stories. I hated Colin Baker when he had his turn in the 80's but I feel now that I was being unfair. It wasn't really his fault. He just happened to be the Doctor when the show was at a low point. Remove that bloody ridiculous costume and he's actually a pretty good Doc. Equally, Sylvester McCoy's Doc continues in the slightly darker vein he was adopting by the end. They're very good productions all round.

Well, as I started this and finally got the time to sit down and watch it last night I had to have my say.

First, my favorite Doctor has always been... the new one, each time he regenerates. I love the wonder and all of the new Doctor discovering himself and the confusion of the companion and the whole regeneration thing. And this time was the best I can recall. Full of tension and that panache that is his signature. Will he finish regenerating in time to save the Earth? (Well, of course he will but they played it well
) What will his new look be? Nice choice there btw.

Second, my major disappointment, like Crow, that stupid bit with the PM firing the Torchwood cannon at the end. What a collassal blunder imo. Up to that point I was very wrapped up in the whole Torchwood mystery, now I couldn't care less about it. How much better (and in character), for the show and snagging viewers to Torchwood, it would have been if she'd simply said "Have them stand down, the Doctor is back." The only value of the scene is it provides for the Doctor's "six little words" which was very cool but I would still be happier if it weren't necessary.

Oh well, at least there IS a Season 2 of the new Doctor Who to look forward :D

Ok. We have done doctors, so to speak. Clearly assistants are next on the list. Is anyone seriously going to argue that Billie Piper is not the best?

Billie Piper, certainly is the best. But coming a close second are Leela, Nyssa and Peri. My only problem is that they stopped dressing down assistants...with Mel...so, I was really looking forward to Billie's enterance...but they followed the old scrubbed look. So, here's to the New Season...must be coming up soon over in the UK.

Sarah Jane Smith will always be the definative assistant for me. I find Billie a bit unremarkable really. How delighted was I that Liz Sladen will be popping up in Episode 3 of the new series! Joy-oy!

thread necromancer

Weird it has taken me a long time to be interested in Dr. Who.
Just got a hold of some of the first Tom Baker episodes that I am looking forward to viewing later today.

I did a search for threads on Dr. Who and this is one of the few I found. Fun looking at the names of the people. I have totally missed out on the start of the new Dr. Who but that will be my next entertainment project.
