Varangia System Patrol Accident Report on the Misjump and Subsequent Loss of the M/S Federal Sky
On 117-1103, the Merchant Starship (M/S) Federal Sky was operating between Varangia Secondus and Varangia Proper. The Federal Sky owned by Federal Partners Limited of Varangia Proper was a 1500 ton bulk carrier in service hauling ore from Varangia Secondus to the Guard Post Processing plant in orbit of Varangia Proper. She had left Varangia Secondus on 109-1103 with a full load of iron and zinc ores mined from the Rock Belt asteroids of Varangia Secondus.
Normal operations were reported before the M/S Federal Sky initiated the jump sequence for a micro jump to Varangia Prime and the planet of Varangia Proper. Upon breakout from jump on 117-1103, the Federal Sky declared an emergency reporting an explosion in her engineering space that had occurred just after transition to jump and that her Maneuver drive was damaged and unable to provide sufficient thrust to change course. Her course at the time was straight for Komnenos the gas giant that Varangia Proper orbits.
Ordinarily M/S Federal Sky would leave Varangia Proper with a full load of fuel which is sufficient to travel to Varangia Secondus and back. However, this trip required additional maneuvering at Varangia Secondus which burned addition fuel. Thus the Captain of the Federal Sky took aboard fuel at Secondus Station prior to departure. This fuel was supposed refined by the contractor that supplied the station, Vector Delta fuels.
Samples taken by the System Patrol on 127-1103 showed higher than acceptable levels of a variety of contaminants including a variety of nitrogen compounds. These would affect the fusion reaction.
It is the judgement of this panel that the loss of the M/S Federal Sky was due to contaminated fuel resulting in the explosion that destroyed the ability of the ship to be maneuvered.
