mineral extraction technology

Pwyll

SOC-12
does anyone here have experience with extractive metallurgy ?

what sort of equipment would support mining platforms a la beltstrike?

i designed a mineral extraction platform with HGS, but i'm not sure its big enough... it sure did get expensive tho

COMMENTS
Extraction facilities process ores of many different types into metals of a grade
suitable for sale and shipment to manufacturers.
The missile and particle accelerator bays and sandcaster turrets are for
defense, the repulsor bays are used to assist in ore handling.
Except for the TL 12 computers and armament, this ship is designed to be
maintained and repaired at TL 9 starports. Actual cargo carpacity is decreased
by 165 tons (because of the TL 9 fuel refinery).
One of the shuttles is equipped for refueling, the others are equipped for ore
handling. The ships boat supports system-wide transfers. The cutter may
support boarding parties or other functions as needed, and has an extra module
for flexibility.
The high passage area supports in-system crew vacations.
=====================================

perhaps one of the extraction bays might be devoted to a maintenance and repair facility for mining platforms or even this ship. hehehe just how big is a shipyard?

No hands on experience but...

I did a design for asteroid mining based on the 1000t tender.
If we're discussing asteroid belt work then you'd probably assume the majority of work is "crushed rock". Unless your vessel is intended to provide support to planetary operations in which case it might need to support a slew of ocean mining operations.

I'd also suggest that weapons bays really don't fit the bill. I'd suggest a number of laser turrets, perhaps 24. I'm not sure why they'd want to maintain and support a missile defense, or fighter squadron.

Also, its not clear what is dedicate to space & credits to the mining operation specifically.

Hi Pwyll,
I don't know if it's any use to you but GURPs Starships has rules for Ore Processors(400t; cost, crew, EP and ore processed per hour vary by TL) and ship construction modules(600t+100 work crew per 100t of ship to be built).
There are a lot of other components in the book that can be integrated with the other Traveller ship design systems IMHO.
And no, I'm not a sales rep for SJGs ;) . I just like the book.
Happy New Year

you inspired me to start thinking on a bigger scale, thank you!

the assumption with this Extraction Platform is that it will be supplied with 1 ton chunks of ore by one or more Mining Platforms or similar vessels already in-system. i assume that 400 tons of equipment (aboard a mining platform) is about enough to reduce large chunks of ore-bearing rock (and/or possibly ice) to nice, easy-to-handle 1 ton parcels.

our needs for equipment extract the desired metals get much more complex and varied.

as far as i could find, chemical reduction, or smelting, is associated relatively low value metals like iron, copper and nickel, so a smeltery would probably not be desireable aboard a starship.

so to extract the valuable metals, we need equipment for milling and electrolysis. generally, ore will first need to be reduced to a powdery state by a mill. the chemicals and equipment used in any electrolysis will vary a bit according to the metal being extracted and the ore which is being reduced. all of these operations must be safely contained, especially radioactives. the equipment i envision in the Extraction Bays would be several mills, a plethora of electrolysis vats, and their associated "infrastructure".

the weapons bays allow for customization. in more secure areas, perhaps fewer missile bays would be mounted and they may be used for storage of ships vehicles, supplies, or refined products. a continuous patrol of 4 fighters is maintained to give early warning of approaches. the fighters, armament and troop complement are intended to defend against pirates and competitors, since this vessel will normally operate far from assistance.

the maintenance and repair facility was an afterthought, and is so not allowed for in the design.

thanks for your input Sigg and Savage

Pwyll,

Good, this is a more positive direction and I'm glad your inspired. But I don't think I was very
clear about the weapons. Let me re-address it.

Armour is good. Lots of armour is better. These vessels are in rough environments under constant
physical abuse.
I'd also suggest that they'd never want missiles.
They take up useful cargo. Missiles present other dangers when working in rough envionments (aka asteroid belts).

If an oil company is operating in the pirate waters off china they don't fully arm their tankers with hvy wpns. Instead they hire mercenaries and other vessels to protect them. Or ask the government. On board they'll have a few security troops/cops to keep things under control. 100kt ships aren't likely targets of 2-3 400t corsairs. Just wouldn't fly. the 100kt ship could have 3 laser batteries of 10 and out gun them. And fighters are once again unnecessary since we have system wide scanners. Ok, I'll buy a repulsor bay that works for multiple purposes.

My suggestions: Design the ship with 50 open hardpoints and a couple bays. Equip the powerplant to be able to handle 50 triple laser turrets if necessary and let the various corporations decide to upgrade as necessary. Keep a couple repulsor bays that has other uses. Have everything else as configurable. At most give it 2 batteries of 10 wpns standard. If corsairs harrassed anything this big they'd be crazy. If it was completely unarmed they'd probably only want the payroll.

missiles are a cheap way get an attack rating of 9, and they give the option of nuclear attacks
file_23.gif

as an aside, this ship is unlikely to operate in an asteroid belt... it would scoop up trails of ore parcels launched by the mining platforms in the belts.

we're planning to be a bit more independent than that. it'd likely be days before any other vessels could arrive to assist. local government could conceivably be disinclined to help at all.

and the small craft and any other valuable, portable equipment, and as much product and hostages as they could carry... perhaps enough to cripple operations.

regardless, our competitors are probably a greater threat. one relatively small ship with a meson bay or nuclear weapons could quickly ruin our investment, so we screen the ship. the extra troops help to protect against special forces and terrorist operations.

i did reconsider each weapon system, and eliminated a couple.

thanks for your input!
