megatraveller compared to CT ?

Im onyl familiar with the classic and GURPS versions. How does MT and CT differ, mainly in terms of mechanics ?

Where does it benefit, and where does it suffer ?

Is it worth acquiring as an idea mine, for CT games or is it too different ?

Cheers, and Im hoping this isnt a flame war topic!

First up when the DGP Group assisted GDW in creating MT they gave us THE task system, first introduced for CT in The Travellers Digest.

Basic chargen was adjusted so that players have the ability to gain as many skills as advanced chargen.

Combat though badly written and appearing as some kind of bizarre enigma is actually very good, based on snapshot/ahl/striker.

Vehicle & Starship design is based directly on Striker vehicle design. Complex but not as bad as FF&S.

What was wrong. It had TOO much errata. Way too much.

But it is still worth getting.

It had a more comprehensive equipment list*, and had a "Special Duty" section for Basic CG, and had a different damage system. It also advanced the timeline and brought about the Rebellion as a setting.

*: more items, such as vid-comms for example. Though I still feel that the tech and mass/volume requirements of many items are way too high, and that the damage of rifles as compared to pistols was not enough (if a pistol does 3d damage, why doesn't a rifle do 4d? And if the Gauss Pistol does 4d, why does the Gauss rifle do 3d? That doesn't make sense! Not that I want a debate).

If you like GT, stay with GT, as it is a more evolved system. But, MT, will give you the thought patterns that went into MT and maybe some of the justifications why CT needed to be changed to consolidate all rules in one place. But, as GT does that as well, the mechanics you play have to feel comfortable. For me, it has always been a tweaked MT.

Better skills system.

Better task system.

An actual Experience System.

More spiffy world design rules.

Expanded characters system.

Better binding than The Traveller Book (which is not bad, at all, either).

I hated the MT ship combat system, I just kept high guard for large battles and CT for small ships.

There's a lot there, just some holes.

I think I like everything about MT better than CT, except for starship design and the use of kiloliters instead of tons.
