just some thoughts.
Looking back up the thread, just how do you suppose the imperium manages to have flat rate shipping?
We have seen repeated analysis that small ships cannot much more than break even at those rates. And an economy that can truly support Mega corps REQUIRES ultra high traffic between worlds. At those volumes the number of small ships required to support any but the smallest worlds runs in to the hundreds of thousands of ships a week.
The Megas compete because they are the force that guarantees the flat rates for transport can be met at a profit.
A new start up that threatens your profit. You spend more per month on corporate "troubleshooters" than the net worth of that pesky little upstart.
Remember, there is a REASON the Imperial navy looks the other way as long as war does not interfere with trade. And maybe once a millennium or so, one of those upstarts managers to live long enough to become a segional player. Now it is in their interests to play ball.
Cooroperate and you get access to routes the megas don't want to bother with. Or they want to relocate manufacturing capacity, and if you have been paying your dues, you stand to get the new business.
Don't play ball, and you can't seem to find dealers or brokers or warehouses. And it is funny how your factories brake down so often. And didn't you just settle a strike last month.
Where does cannon EVER suggest free trade would be tolerated, or even allowed? The Impirium has been moribund for a thousand years or more, and they got that way and stay that way because the economy is stable. As I recall, cannon so almost exactly that.
All, as in every single one of the basic patents that are worth everything is either an original property of one of the players, or the original owner was bought out, blackmailed, bankrupted or killed. The squeaky wheel doesn't get the grease, they get greased.
I am sorry, I thought this was all self evident, and all of the free trade, and lassie faire stuff people mention simply does not exist within Imperial space. Or the other polities border it, either.
The government wants a stable economy, and the Megas work with the Imperium to make that happen. The nobles get the wealth, and a stable government, where everybody knows their place and either stays in it, or gets squashed back into their place.
