Larger Gauss Weapons?

slyen2002

SOC-12
normally there are only the 2 gauss weapons: Gauss Rifle and the VRF Gauss Gun. but has any others been designed like a Gauss weapon that is more like the Gauss rifle than the VRF but is a vehicle mount or a starship version.

any ideas?

Both TNE and GT offer a wider variety of gauss based weapons. There may even be some in T4's Emperor's Arsenal.

By vehicle or starship mounted are you still meaning a man portable weapon adapted for vehicle use or some sort of vehicle scale weapon like a mass driver?

yes only Gauss

as for TNE it offered versions based off of the basic Rifle, pistol, and VRF. as for Gurps and T4 i wouldn't know because i've never played them.

Here's a precis of what T4 has to offer.

TL12 Gauss Sniper Rifle, 10 shots, 10.4kg, ammo 2.1kg
TL12 Gauss RF MG, 500 shots, 68kg, ammo 58kg
TL13 Gauss Shotgun(flechette), 20 shots, 7kg, ammo 2.9kg
TL14 Gauss Shotgun(flechette), 20 shots, 6.3kg, ammo 1.8kg
TL16? Gauss AM rifle, 100 shots, 4.8kg, ammo 1.9kg

//starship version.//

Like a spine mount mass driver that could hurl a 10000 ton asteroid into a planet at extreme speeds? seems like it would be pretty doable at TL9 or above and would be a truly devistating weapon.

as for gauss or mass driver anti-ship weapons the problem is range, most start ship combat happens at tens of thousands of kilometers and i would think an unguided projectile would be easy to avoid.

another item is Traveller sitting the TL for gauss weapons at 12+.. seems a bit off since we have mag guns now, though big ones and in a setting where contra grav, anti grav, and what not are common it is hard to believe gauss weapons would not be available in rifle or pistol form at about TL9 also.

Now a weapon that Traveller never really used is gyrojet weapons.. mini exploding rockets fired from a pistol or rifle. the british have experimented with the concept and it is a very doable weapon at TL6+ with higher tech being better more devistating ammo.

I think imma start a thread about this.

well the reason i started this is i wanted to do a Halo based campegin in a game system and traveller was the closest realitive out of Star Wars and D&D. The main gun of the Earth forces is a Mach Cannon which is a really, really, really big gauss gun. the main ship in halo that goes down in the beginning of the game was a CL and most of the ship was this gun. another thing i would need for it would be a specs for two guns: The Plasma Pistol and a Needler.

any ideas would be nice.

Probably.

It is described as an "anti-material" weapon, and we all know what that means ;)

There is a plasma pistol listed on the expanded CT/MT TL chart. It is, unfortunately, TL17.
There may be stats for it somewhere.

The gauss shotguns in my post above could be described as needlers since they can fire a cloud of flechettes.

You mean apart from the Accelerator Rifle, the Snub pistol and its smg derivatives, the Accelerator pistol, and the Assault Rocket Launcher??? ;)

Oh, and here is a precis of the GT gauss weapons:

GTL10 Gauss smg, 40 shots, 3lbs, ammo 0.1lbs
GTL10 Electromagnetic Battle Rifle, 18 shots, 27.1lbs, ammo 27.1lbs
GTL11 Gauss LSW, 600 shots, 15.7lbs, ammo 1.8lbs
GTL11 MPAT, 1 shot, 53.4lbs, ammo 5.7lbs

there are shipborad AIs in Halo. also the Covenant is a higher tech level than earth.

the needler can be described as a flechette HE crystal energy weapon. to make it simple it fires shards of crystals powered by energy into a target the crystals then explode but you can only see it with a large number of crystals in the target.

I was thinking more of the explosive warhead than the propellant

And I would hardly call HE, HEAP, tranq and gas rounds conventional for a pistol ;)

Fire, Fusion and Steel for TNE, or FF&S2 for T4, or even GURPS Vehicles fot GT. All three will allow you to build new field artillery gauss weapons, usually called mass drivers.

And of course for CT there is always Striker, which has full design rules for all manner of different vehicles and weapon systems.
