40K, Dune, Vorkosiverse, and Andromeda, as well.Or, ala, Fading Suns or Wing Commander] must have a psychic component when performed by individuals...
D.
I like the visualization from Andromeda - the synthetic personality sees literally nothing, nor do the mechanical sensors... but the people almost all see strands and filaments to be dodged... but that would make a week-long jump a huge issue.
Vokosiverse it's worse - must be able to do 5-D math, must be able to tolerate the jump, AND must be willing to be cyberlinked into the ship. But jumps themselves are fairly short there... but require n-space travel between jump points.
40K, it's to be able to see the warp at all while not in it...
It's a fairly common theme, really.
